new in town; had a few questions

IMO I have had quality service from two stores in town. And one has always guaranteed fish and either replaced or gave me store credit or something to make it right if I lost a fish within two weeks of purchase. I have to agree on the pricing game. Either post it or say its not for sale. I always feel I'm getting the sucker price if I have to ask. If there are sick fish on display I'm not buying anything either. Everyone in this hobby knows tank maintenance is never ending so a dirty store tank... Get busy. I've seen one store that keeps tanks immaculate. But that store is not much or guarantees.

These threads are seen, and heard. Some of the stores are trying to make changes to how things have been done in the past. There have been multiple times where I have found fish/corals for cheaper/same/ or a couple bucks more than online, not even including shipping at the LFS, plus I get to see what I am buying. These days with people's photoshop skills, you can never tell 100% what you are getting. Plus, I can always go and pick up hermit crabs or snails. Live aquaria, I would have to buy $30 worth of crabs and snails to be able to buy them, and then another $35 for shipping. Right now, a yellow tang from LiveAquaria costs $39.99 + $34.99 shipping, so it costs $75. There is no way I would pay, $75 for a yellow tang. If you go one for one with a LFS, the LFS will almost always come out cheaper.
It is pretty easy to pick on local businesses because they obviously can not fulfill the needs of each and every person, so its easy to find flaws. I agree, customer service should be top notch. But how can you say customer service is bad, and then order online from a website where there is no customer service?
Also, I have had to call a LFS for emergency help as a tank was leaking and felt really good when I saw the LFS store truck pull up with help all with shop vacs and tools in hand. By giving constructive feedback and building a relationship with the LFS of your choice, you can make a difference and they will try to meet your needs the best they can.

Undone guy, welcome to Tucson again!

I am sorry that your experience at our LFS wall of them. I wish I could give you good excuses. There aren't any though.

I do believe that these posts are read by the owners of the stores and I hope that your experience is addressed along with the complaints and issues of other members. I can't disagree with any of the postings that were made here, especially on the cleanliness and dead fish issues.

I agree with scubabum1983 that it is important to support our LFS. I always try to purchase locally. Having a 1,400 gallon system though, I have ordered a ton online because I am searching for special corals or fish. The orders come with good and bad.

I will say that when I have had a bad experience locally, after speaking with the owners, things were made good. I've noticed one thing as this economy took a downward spiral. The owners of our LFS began spending less time in their respective stores and more time doing aquarium service (maintenance) accounts. This left store responsibilities to employees that, perhaps, don't care as much.

Hopefully, changes will be made and soon.

Give the stores another chance. Talk to the owners and let them make things right!

You make some good points but your yellow tang example applies only for people who are buying cheaper products. Sure if I'm going to buy $50-$100 worth of hardy fish it is better to go the the LFS (assuming they are not price gouging you that day, remember they do not list their prices on their tanks). But if I'm buying a 150+ dollar fish I feel much safer that liveaquaria will provide a healthy specimen. If for some reason the fish/coral does not make it, they will provide a full refund of my money no questions asked. The LFS will likely offer store credit and then I will have to wait a significant amount of time until they get a new specimen. Try taking a $200 dollar dead fish into any LFS and asking for your money back, I'm sure they would not be happy.

When you say there is no customer service online you are mistaken. IMO Liveaquaria has the best customer service I've experienced in any industry (not just marine aquarium products). You can call or email them if you have a problem and they will not only tell you how to treat your fish, but they will extend their 14 day guarantee at your request. Also if you order from divers den you get fish that are pre-conditioned to eat in a captive environment which is an absolutely amazing service for those who like to keep finicky feeders. Just look the the vendor experience forum on this site and you will see why liveaquaria is so well regarded in this industry. Unfortunately for the LFS the bar has been set very high and they should not expect customer support unless they up their game.

What I mean by no customer service is the fact that you are navigating the website on your own. There is someone immediately there to help you pick something out or answer immediate questions. Many that use online, sometimes never have to deal with customer service. On the $150+ range of fish, again going to live aquaria, say that's all you want at the moment, you still have to add $35 shipping. Next time you go to a LFS, offer to pay additional $35 on what you are buying and ask if they will guarantee the fish then.
On another side, by offering guarantees for 2 weeks plus, leads to careless people. I have been to LFS and here people trying to buy tangs to put in there 12g nano, or they are buying the tank, plus sand etc and trying to buy fish with it as we'll so that they can have instant gratification. Well of course most fish will die because of that, but oh well I will just get a free one, or my money back. I personally do care about losing a fish no matter what the cost, and each year our hobby is under scrutiny to see if the hobby will be able to continue. We are at that point right now with no CITES permits renewed. It's hard to believe but Reefcentral hobbyists are only a small percentage of people keeping or wanting reef aquariums, and on top of that the percentage of people buying $150+ fish or having a suitable tank to keep them in is even smaller.

All good points but I'll take the 14 day guarantee on my $200 fish over buying it locally without question especially if I'm gonna have to eat the cost when the fish comes in unhealthy. I would also gladly pay the LFS $35 extra for insurance on my purchase but it better come with some serious service to go with it.

Hi everyone thanks for the warm welcome! I don't want to start anything so I wont be specific (unless it's ok?), but here's a little background on what happened. When I arrived to town I setup my nano tank and let it settle for a week to make sure it survived the move (was previously setup for ~1.5 years). Luckily all corals (sps/lps/zoas/softies) and fish (2 ocellaris) were perfectly fine.

I started to browse around town to look for a suitable nano companion for my clowns. I got pretty excited browsing their websites and looking at the pictures of their stores...and to my surprise things were quite different in person. The two I visited didn't have much livestock, and were pretty overrun with algae breakouts. Now I understand keeping up with fish store maintenance can't be easy, but these were unacceptable in my book. Luckily I am willing to ignore these things if I can find good livestock and customer service. One of the stores didn't even acknowledge my presence (I've since been back and was acknowledged, so I am willing to forgive them for that). The second store I visited I met and chatted with the owner; he was very friendly and even though his store wasn't up to par, I was willing to give his livestock a chance. Unfortunately he didn't have the fish I wanted in, but told me he should have one the following week.

I dropped by the store the following week just after they got their shipment in. I asked the sales associate (not the owner) how much the fish was, and he looked at something on his phone and told me $34.99. I didn't have time to take it home that day so I decided to come back later for it. One thing that bothered me was that they had absolutely nothing but substrate in their fish tanks. This may be fine for fish who like to swim out in the open, but for smaller nano species who like to hide and perch, the lack of hiding spots seemed to be unnecessarily stressing them out. I waited a few days and my desire for a new fish took over and I went back to the store.

This visit was a little different. The owner was there instructing his employees what he wanted them to do (aquascaping their frag tanks etc). I don't have a problem with this, but when I asked for assistance it felt as if I were bothering them. I did not feel welcome. I also noticed that the particular fish I wanted was now shown as $39.99. Regardless of the price change I decided to go ahead with it. I asked the employee if the fish was eating and if he could show me, and he said "oh yea he's eating great". Unfortunately I am not stubborn enough to be persistant (I already didn't feel welcome), so I didn't push the feeding subject matter. He bagged the fish and asked if I wanted fish insurance. As some of you have mentioned above, you would like to see guarantees on livestock. From where I come from, even the crappiest stores in town offered some sort of guarantee on their livestock as long as you brought in water so they could test it. I declined his offer, because for some reason I trusted that his livestock would be of high quality.

I took the fish home and drip acclimated the little guy for 30-45minutes. Let him into the tank, and he found a nice spot to perch right away. To cut a long story short I woke up the next morning to find the fish dead under a rock. The fish lasted less than 8 hours. The employee made it clear that if I did not purchase their fish insurance then anything that happens and I'm out of luck. Now I'd love to blame my tank, but my rock, fish, and coral have been going strong for over a year now. My working theory is that after being shipped to the store, spending a few days in a tank with no where to hide, under constant duress from a lack of hiding spaces, then being bagged and transferred to a new tank, killed the fish. When I introduced him into my tank I noticed he was breathing a bit heavy, but I figured it was just stress from the new environment. Either way I didn't expect to wake up to him dead the next morning. I've had fish die on me before for various reasons, but never within the first 8 hours. Given their policy on dead livestock, and the unwelcomeness I felt when purchasing, I didn't think it would be worth the hassle to contact the owner.

Anyway, this whole ordeal is what led me here to ask you guys about the LFS here in town. In the mean time my girlfriend discovered GQfish and she was quite impressed with his store's cleanliness and friendliness. I haven't had an opportunity to visit yet but plan on heading there some time this week.

Again thanks for your advice!

Yeah that sucks!!! Sorry for your lost of the fish and money!!! You must be talking about Oasis. Oasis had their 9th year anniversary and the crappy part was on their website their business hours were 11am-6pm Tuesday-Saturday but the day of the sale they opened at 11:15 am (or I should say showed up). I was just like wow / really !!! But I was just happy that they had the Bi-color Blenny that I was looking for, which was advertised in their email for $9.99. I did also decline the insurance but floated the bag for 15 mins to acclimate the bag to the tank temp and then drip acclimated the fish for 30 mins. So far so good but for 9.99 I figure I'd take the chance... And I do understand what your saying about the Local LFS - I mean I moved from Sacramento,CA to here in 2010 and boy oh boy was I in a reef culture shock !!!

Oasis that is the one I coulden't remember the name....Now I know why I chose to forget them...Just my opinion...I do like JarJar though

Sorry for your loss. IME the mortality rate on fish from LFS in Tucson is very low, so I always make sure the fish is aggressively eating before making a purchase. Haven't tried GQ, it is to far on the other side of town. Hope you have better luck there.

yea for $10 it's hard to complain, but when you shell out $40 it's about 4x as bad =(

I didn't think anyone liked JarJar =P
