New In-wall Project Begins

I guess "cooking" may not be the best term depending on how you look at it.

I'm going to take the rock and load it into trash cans with high circulation and perform multiple water changes over the next two weeks. If the rock has a lot of die off, I'll reconfigure with a skimmer and water changes.

I'm headed to open the boxes up in a couple of minutes...

Here are some first shots of the new rock;

The rock is very fresh and had very little to no odor. There are numerous sponges and life throughout most all of the rock. I washed everything off thoroughly with fresh water and loaded it into a trash can with powerheads and a heater from our water change last night. I'll do 30-50% water changes every 3-4 days. I still might need some base rock, but haven't decided yet.

Should make for a nice addition to the tank...

See I thought cooking is when people put it in a bin with a cover and keep it 100% dark for a long long time doing the power head thing and water changes. What I would think your doing is curing some fresh live rock maybe? Why the rinsing with fresh water, I would think that would wipe every thing out on it? Pretty looking tho...is that what you thought it would look like?

Nolacls - You're right... It's more of a curing session, but in the dark. The coloration looked pretty good and I was happy with the lack of smell!

Built the new light rack today. It's setup with the two Luminarc L3 reflectors for our 250W MH and four 110W VHOs (46.5 or 48").

The rack will be mounted to the ceiling with pulleys to allow for easy access to the top of the tank or acclimating after bulb changes.

Thanks Brian...

It's progress. I need to finish the hanging bracket and mount the pulleys, but beyond that it's about ready.

Last night we finished building a stand for the MR3 skimmer and plumbed in the return and skimmer pumps (PCX55-HP) into the sump. I'm still planning on feeding the refugium with the effluent from the skimmer. It works well in our current system, but the PCX55 may move too much water for the fuge which would require a diversion valve. Won't know until we get everything running late next week.

Just to let you know doug I have two of my lums on my 110 till my new tank is up and running. The tank is only 18" front to back but I tried turning the reflectors sideways like you have them and it seemed the light was not as good as when it was the other way. It may be the way the bulb is facing because the different angles on the reflectors are all the same. Could be my imagination to but just wanted to let you know :D

Nolacls - Now I'm confused...

Which reflectors are you speaking of. The Luminarc reflectors will hang directly over the tank equally divided across the surface area.

We did tilt the back brackets for two of the VHO Actinic bulbs near the back. There could be a slight angle of attack issue with those bulbs in which we see more reflection than penetration? Interesting thought...

Doug,

do you have a picture of the inside of the Lum's. Im just curious what they look like under there.

I'll see if I can shoot you a picture tonight between packing.

I think NOLACLS means that the Luminarcs are being mounted parallel vs perpendicular.
Now I see what you are saying. You are probably right... I have our bulbs running parallel in our current 75 with just simple spider type reflectors and they look alright. I'll start this way simply because the rack is done and we are running out of time. We should drop the tank in-place Thursday night. I hope to be plumbed and wet testing with tap water late Friday. Thanks for the clarification

That is what I was talking about doug :D From the looks of it you should be able to just lift and turn them. Is that so or do you have to re-build it?

I have a few pics of my Lum's in my gallery if you want to see the inside. If you can fit them on your tank and run se's I would get them. Very cool reflector!!

Doug, I checked out NOLACLS pics so dont worry about taking any of the Lum's. Thanks for the offer though.

How much did you guys end up paying for each reflector including the mogul base?

I got in on a group buy and got them for about 100 each with the mogul. Non group buy is like 130ish I think. PSG in the sponsor section has them. They also have a mini version that is an exact replica but they are only 14x14 as opposed to 20x20. That would be sweet on smaller tanks!

Just a quick update. We finally got the computer back up tonight after moving all weekend. The tank is in the wall and 70% plumbed. A quick trip to HD Tuesday should get us up and running. Qwest hasn't gotten our DSL back up yet and the pictures of the install would kill our dial-up. I'll update with pictures later this week when things settle in a little.

Brian - In helicopters I fly a TT Raptor II and Hirobo GPH. In sailplanes I mostly fly duration HLG, 2M, and 3M. Truth be told, I haven't flown much of anything in the past year. Things have very chaotic at work and getting ready for the new house and tank.
