New Jebao UV unit need thoughts.

I am looking for a UV sterilizer. I have found this 75watt unit from Jebao. What are your thoughts. It is stainless steel and I am wondering about using it with a salt water aquarium.

Not all stainless is salt water safe in fact, I wouldn't use anything that has a fully body of stainless steel exposed to salt water. I'd bet that thing would corrode pretty darn quick if continually exposed to salt water.

If you want a good UV, get an Aqua UV or Emperor Aquatics. Both are designed for salt water use, offer easy serviceability and have good ballasts that won't fail on you a year down the road.

Totally agree with Scott. I wouldnt take a chance with this jebao product. I use their powerheads without hesitation but not something like this. I have an Emperor Aquatics UV and wouldnt use anything else.

I would be surprised if any of the stainless is exposed to the water. Internally is probably glass or plastic. Jebao makes a decent product and the price looks good.

There is a reason why these are rated for pond/fresh water use and not salt water. If the insides were lined, they probably would have marketed for both applications. I will also point out that they tout the use of a stainless body vs plastic.. And I quote " The Jebao STU range of UV sterilizers are designed and manufactured out of high quality stainless steel. The stainless steel is at least 35% more effective than the usual plastic material on the body of a UV system." This makes it fairly safe to assume that there is no plastic protecting the inside of the UV.

As far as internals go, the only thing that may be glass is the sleeve. This assuming they are using a glass or crystal sleeve as opposed to direct water contact with the bulbs which is common with cheaper UV sterilizer and not really a great solution for salt water where maintenance is important due to calcium buildup.

I stand by what I said in that this UV filter is not a great solution for salt water use.
