Still working on fish shots.....this one is with the kit lens, not very clear

That's a nice fish shot. I am refining my technique for fish. I find using the flash helps, especially for faster moving species. From there, it's just a matter of how fast your camera focuses. The 10d and the Rebels that I have used in the past seemed to have very quick focusing. My new Pentax is pretty quick, but I don't think as quick as the Canons. There's also the other technique of setting the camera to manual focus and waiting for the fish to come into your field of focus.

Did a few Actinic shots today.....dont know if Im going to remember all these setting...:) but sure fun learning.

Depends more on the lens than the body, regardless of brand. The canon lenses with USM focus are much faster (and quieter) than some of the older styles. The one on my 70-200L, in particular, is amazingly fast. It can go from something 5 feet away to something on the horizon in the time it takes you to blink.

So with this Macro lens, you can take regular shots aswell? Thus making the lens it came with obsolete?

Yes, the 100mm can focus at any distance from ~6" to infinity. At f2.8, it is a fast, high-quality prime for use anywhere. The only drawback is that 100mm is effectively 160mm on a canon crop body camera, so you may find yourself having to back up a bit. :D

how far away are the objects that you are photographing?
Jess the photo on the zoos I'm about 12" away....Wish I could get a little closer.......I'm still not use to the lens....I have to backup a bit to be in focus. some of the corals in the back of the tank I can get the Lens right up to the glass. I'm still having a little problem with focusing....think it has to do with the water moving maybe I will try to shut off the pumps the next lesion

I wouldnt say obsolete....the kit lens is a good all around lens...the 100mm macro lens is a little heavy to carrier around all day......:)

Are you focusing manually or auto (AF)? In AF, there are multiple focus points, and the camera samples each for sharpness while adjusting focus. When it finds what it likes, the selected points flash red through the viewfinder. I suspect you're using AF, and the camera is picking this focal depth because it brings more of the points "in focus", regardless of your intended outcome.

If you want to use AF, you can also select which of the focus points you want to be active. If you want to rely solely on the center focus point while setting AF, you can set it to just the center point. When you go to shoot, put the center point on the area you want to be in focus, press the shutter halfway, then move and recompose the shot. If the camera is in the default "single shot" AF mode, it will the same focus position as long as you holding the shutter halfway.

Or, you can throw all that away, put the camera on a tripod, and focus manually. :D

Thats what it looks like....just focused on the top half...will have to try a few more things
Thanks Jeff

lets see some more pics brian i'm enjoying these
Jess...most of the pictures I been taking are just test shots. Trying to learn the len and camera, different setting, I found out my best shots are taking with all the pumps off. The fish are freaking out because I keep shutting the pumps off. So been trying different setting....so I can take good pictures with the flow of water. But here is one I shot last night, you can see in the background one of your zoo frags...doubled in size

thats a nice shot man, good job. i see a future photo of the month coming up.
Thanks Jess...:) Im finding taking pictures of fish, is kind of tricky. Some times I feel like reaching into the tank and grabbing the fish and holding him still...:) I will keep you posted with the progress

I feel you, sometimes i just sit there waiting and waiting and waiting, just to get a pic of my clown in its host open brain. It will go there as soon as i put camera down but when i have cam up to glass he just won't say "cheese".
