New Lights, Anemone Change in Color

Greetings All- I purchased a RBTA about 3 weeks and had it under T5s (2 54w 10k, 2 actinics). This past weekend I purchased a third fixture, bringing my total to 3 54w 10ks, and 3 actinic bulbs. The color of my anemone has started to change and half of the tentacles appear to be dark grey. the anemone is hungry and eats its piece of silverside without issue. is there something wrong?? Thanks for the help!

He/she looks healthy to me.I don't see any problems with the anemone. My RBTA has the same coloration.I like it to be honset!

Oh and a little FYI alot of people will not aprove of you feeding silversides.Im not a fan of it either because they are hard to keep fresh while being shipped and they tend to become a very "spoiled" fish once recived.Plus they really stink too...lol Try feeding some Mysis Shrimp!

thanks for your help and easing my concerns!!

the only reason I am feeding silversides is because the fragger stated that the RBTA is eating silversides. i have heard that anemones are sometimes picky eaters. i purchased a frozen package of silversides and only cut up a small piece and defrost as needed.

Umm...Ive really have never heard of a anemone being a picky eater???

I think he would be fine if you swiched foods.Mine will just about eat anything that dosent fight back!So try feeding some new foods like mysis or krill!

thanks for the help. i am just passing on what i was told by the fragger.

i can squirt a mixture of NLS, bloodworms, selcon, and some other coral supplements into the area of the anemone when I next feed my corals (tomorrow night).

My nems have all changed in shape, size, and color over the years, even under same lighting, normal.
I haven't heard of any being too picky either.

thanks for your help. the RBTA changes as the lights are on and off, but really has appeared to open up more with the addition of the last fixture. my ricordias are also really opening up.

I also want to point out that silversides are bad for BTA's and nems in general because they are so large. Though I don't have any literature to cite, I've heard antectotal evidence saying it takes more energy to digest a huge chunk of food than it does small pieces. There are also a lot of scales, bones etc that are difficult for the nem to digest that it will have to expell. Feed your nem frozen mysis or other meaty chopped up frozen foods. I just let mine catch what it can when I feed my fish. 4 RBTA's under 4x 39W T5 for 3 years at all levels of the tank have done just fine.

i always chop up the pieces of silversides that i feed my BTA. it takes awhile (2 weeks) to go through a whole silverside. i will defrost some shrimp and chop those up for today's feeding. worse case scenario, the BTA spits it out!
