am looking at two lighting setups for my 75g one is "Sunlight Tek Light T5 Hood - 48" x 6 bulb" and the other is "AquaMedic Ocean Light 48" 2 x 250W plus 2x54W T5" one is a t5 and one is a de mh fixture. I have been reading alot on reefcentral and searching the web but i am still not sure. if some one has some links or some experience with t5s or mh. It would help out alot going to start having alot more sps's in my tank and clams its going to be alot of $ so i want to make sure.

I would go with 250 watt mh for sure. I have had both an 8 bulb tek light and mh i perfer the mh esp for sps

whats the price difference between the 2 units?

i personally would go with the mh t5ho unit, but that all depends on the tank it is going over.

i have no problem keeping sps and clams with my t5ho retro.

there is a price difference the mh t5 is $600, the t5's are about $500 so ther is about a $100 difference or i can go with the tek 8 bulb with the bulbs for $627. there is really not a big price difference

The more I look at different tanks, and my tank with MH and PCs, I KNOW my next tank will be 250 Watt MH and VHO..... I am sorry, VHO is still the bomb compared to T5 and PCs from a look standpoint. Just my opinion. I like the MH for sure, but the PCs are pathetic for actinic supplementation. From what I have seen the T5 are better, but not that much..... VHO....with an icecap electronic ballast.......

Steve, I was debating this same issue. Setting up a new tank, have one 48" aqua medic 2x 250, 1x 150 fixture. Was thinking about a t5 fixture to go with it, but decided to go with another mh fixture. I'll have 4x250 and 2x150w mh over my new tank(54x32x24). Still thinking about what bulbs I'll be running.

ed, have you seen the actinic + or blue+ bulbs? the straight up actinic geiseman bulbs are weak. and if that doesnt do it for ya, UVLighting (formerly URI) now has super actinic t5ho that are supposed to be the spittig image of the URI SA bulb.

sullyman can you send me some pics of the 48" aqua medic 2x 250, 1x 150 fixture and how do you like the 150mh in the middle instead of to 54w t5s. i think am going with the one you got or the one with the t5.

Are you talking about PCs?? If so, I will have to check them out... are they called Actinic Plus?

order my lights today very happy. aqua medic 2 250wmh an to 54w t5s. should i hang my lights above about 18" and gain hours every day 1,2,3,4,5,6, and lower it every other day or should use egg crates and screens and take one off at a time.

Start high, slowly go low, a little at a time and you'll be fine.
I want to see a pic after you've got it set up. I really had a hard time not going with the combo light. I'm still thinking about putting one of the new 2 bulb T5 fixtures from Aqua Medic between the 2 mh fixtures.
Bob

not PC,
but t5ho.

i will never be a fan of PC lighting.
but for fluorescents, you can not beat t5ho.

btw, the new UVlighting super actinic (formerly URI) t5ho bulb is the spitting image of the URI vho, but brighter, longer lasting, and less watts.

I know you love your VHO, but t5ho is way better than VHO.the only things that vho has over t5ho now are the availability of bulbs over 60", and the 18" shorty vho that you can get. T5ho only come in 24, 36, 48,60" varieties. however, you can get T6 in shorter lengths, so there is newer tech available for FL lighting a reeftank. it sounds like you have only seen a t5ho system that doesnt use ati/ geiseman/ GE/ UVL bulbs. the bulbs available from Current usa are really not that good.
