New Mantis

Hi everyone,

I bought a mantis last week.

It's about 3 1/2" total length and looks a lot like the pics of G. smithii that I have found on here. The only difference being that it has 7 very pronounce bumps at the end of the tail.

I am housing ti in a 5 gall tank at the mo and it has made it's home in a 3/4 " diameter plastic elbow and seems quite happy ... having done a 'little redecorating'

The question I have concerns feeding him.

Apparently in the store it was being fed cooked shrimp.

since I have had it I have offered shrimp (cooked and raw) and small fish (silversides) and mysis shrimp and krill.

The first night it shot out of his home and snaffled the fish in seconds... think he must have been starving.

Since then he has not eaten anything :(

When I shine a torch in the home it seems quite active and turns around to have a look at me and this morning it came to the entrance to throw out the food that I had popped in there ... also it has almost completely blocked the entrance to the tube now....

is this behaviour normal ? Could it be that it is moulting?

Any suggestions on what food to offer? (I am going to go and get some turbo snails at the weekend for a bit of sport.

cheers

They should close up their entrance at night, atleast mine does. I feed mine every 2 days with a thawed krill, or a live minnow on a stick :).

Can't tell too much from the photo, but the coloration is interesting and it may not be G. smithii. If you can catch him out and get an image, I might be able to tell more.
