I bought a joker maxima yesterday
I haven't had a clam for 2 years cause something kept killing them after catching the polyclad flatworms I decided to get one.
I'm almost sure it didnt have this yesterday but now has a few bite marks on the edges of the mantle fish in tank include:
sixline wrasse
bananna wrasse
neon pseudochromi
2 clowns naked and percula
powder blue tang
bangai cardinal
blue green chromie
dispar anthias
bicolor blenny
luthers gobie
diamond gobie
mandarine
now I'm on patrol watching but it seems like none of the fish are showing any interest to the clam

ranked in order 1.bicolor blenny 2.bananna wrasse 3.powder blue tang...And what is a Joker Maxima????

lfs says joker maxima I never heard of them either but it is a nice blue maxima I guess ultra color its funny but my bicolor turned whiteish were it used to be black and it looks like poop is stuck by its anus . I had this fish for a couple of years and never saw its color like that

Ive seen my bicolor blenny nip at my clam that i moved into his territory. If u know where he usually hangs out then just move the clam from that area.He never took chunks but he hit the clam pretty hard and it would stay closed.I found this out by trying to move one of my clams higher on the rock work(into his territory).I just moved the clam back to his original spot and all is good hasnt bothered it since.

good luck

i caught the bicolor and put him in jail just in case
the clam was on the sandbed and the blenny is usually in the top rock work.
Is there anything I should to for the clam being it got a few bites or just leave it alone?

as long as you caught the culprit ( and i agree, the bicolor is the #1 suspect ) then just leave the clam alone and he should recover. if he is acting strange then you may need to remove or cover the clam till you find out who it is.

good luck and keep us posted

so far it looks like there are no new bight marks
I have the clam sitting on a small piece of live rock that it attached to directly under a 14k 150 mh on the sand bed in a 125 thats about 22 inches tall is this enough light? back when I used to have clams they did well in the same setup and location .
Should I start feeding the clam phyto by placing it in a container so the phyto isnt wasted ? I never did this before but read about people feeding this way

I'm sure I don't have any crabs the system is almost 7 years old and I spend a lot of time on it Iforgot to mention I have a pair of skunk cleaners and a pair of blood red cleaners but they have never been a problem in the past

anyone ???

It's been over a month the clam healed up but last night i noticed it was closing every time a fish went anywhere near it and not opening all the way .When it finally opened up there were a few bite marks in the mantel.Who can it be now?

good news, does the clam look like he'll recover??

sorry i missed the question about target feeding the clams in a container. the answer is no, clams filter water 24/7 for respiration and trying to feed concentrated phyto can clog the gills and isn't a effective way to feed the clam. that and moving the clam regularly will be stressful for the clam. add the phyto directly to the tank water and let the clam take what he wants when he wants / needs it.

not to hijack the thread, i lost my maxi clam to my blue legged hermit..they cleaned him out overnight. im so mad..75 bucks down the drain. i asked the LFS if the crabs would be a problem and they said no..to make a long story short, im not sure if i should be mad and demand my money back or if this is my fault for not knowing being new to marine ( have years with freshwater). What do you guys think? The hermit just went on top of the clam and just dug into the clam.

i only keep the scarlet legged hermits because long before i kept clams the blue's would eat my snails. i never had trouble with the reds and clams, have a few of 'em now. don't know if it matters but the smallest clam i ever had was 2".
given benefit of the doubt, perhaps the employee didn't know the diff. and assumed they'd be o.k.. i wouldn't demand a refund but because you had asked their advice you should let them know and give them a chance to make good on it.

are you sure the clam didnt die and then the crabs went to work ?I never had a problem with the blue leg hermits I do see them once in a while picking of the side of the shell very close to the mantle
