New Maxima... Okay on the bottom? *PICS*

I purchased a new Maxima last Saturday at our clubs frag swap. This is my second clam in my 24g Aquapod(3rd overall). I had an Crocea succomb to PM earlier this year and most likely this clam will later be moved to my 70g that is being finished.

Here are my questions this being my first Maxima.
1.) Will he get enough light on the sand bed of my 24g Aquapod with a 70w HQI MH?

2.) Do Maximas prefer Sand or Rock?

Currently I sat him on the sand bed with a nice flat piece of LR under him, but he doesn't seem that happy. He has only been in there for a week and isn't opening up fully yet. He also seems to be pushing himself away from the LR I put under him.

As with any thread, this would be useless without pictures. Here he is about 2 days after being placed in tank.

wow, beautiful tear drop :)

why don't you think he has fully opened up yet? he looks to be fully open in that picture.

the lighting will be a bit on the low side ( i am not sure about the depth of your tank ) and the clam would probably do better up on the rocks closer to the light. maxima's require a good deal of light, this sticky does a really good job explaining their lighting requirements.

i don't think they care whether they are on sand or the rock but most people keep them on the rocks, closer to the light. if the clam is moving around he is looking for a better spot. maybe less flow or more light ......., mine do it occasionally too. you could try burying the rock in the sand and placing the clam on top of it. this way if he attaches you can move him and his rock wherever in the tank you want.

certainly not, what a good deal! Hope he does well for you! I would give him a rock to attach to and slowly move him up a bit to see if he wont open up more - usually i've seen without enough light they stretch for it though

I moved him up higher this afternoon and he appears to be opening more.

Maybe he didn't like the flow or sand... who knows.

He has attatched up top and seems to be doing well!

I still can't believe he was only $20. I had heard that Maxima's were getting harder to come by... I know Clams Direct said they were getting harder to get due to overselling the past 2 years.

Despite the namesake Clams Direct is not a big clam importer, at my LFS which I work we order from their supplier which has tons of clams. $20 is an excellent price for a teardrop or maxima at that rate! They are kinda of a fraud with the whole pinched mantle thing which can easily be cured by a fresh water dip and caused by people feed DTs Oyster Eggs which are the likely source of the pathogen that causes it

where did you get this info? did you read it somewhere or did someone at your LFS tell you that?

Thats what Clam's Direct Supplier said, and they dont have a problem with pinched mantle and none of the clams that we get (we get of 30 a month) have ever had a problem

Despite the namesake Clams Direct is not a big clam importer

there not importers at all and dont claim to be.

caused by people feed DTs Oyster Eggs which are the likely source of the pathogen that causes it

your either making this up as you go or someone is giving you really bad info

i agree it would be a waste of you time Barry. the best thing for this clown to do would be to stick his head in his 55 gal. and see how long he can hold his breath.
