hello! i am a new C-SEA member! friday was my first meeting, and i am looking foreward to future meetings and the frag swap.

i currently have a 30 gallon reef, and i am in the process of setting up a 75 gallon reef and 20 gallon sump. very excited!

if you were at the meeting, i was the girl who won the copperband butterfly in the raffle. (he is doing great! i got him eating frozen mysis and littleneck oysters, he is a pig! and interested in everything.)

anyways, just wanted to say hi!

HI ! Welcome. take some time read back several pages theres been a few interesting topics lately, and possibly could answer some questions you may be wondering. Lot of hobbyist on here that are very knowledgeable, a good place to learn or answer some tough questions you may have. Enjoy

Congrats on the win! It seems like every raffle item that John didn't win in the last few raffles is won by brand new members. Guess it's like a welcome gift :)
I was looking forward to taking that copperbanded butterfly home with me :( ... Oh well maybe next month I will win something.
How long has your 30g been set up? Any pictures? If you don't know about www.imageshack.us or www.photobucket.com you can upload your pictures there. Then just post the code to your large picture in your thread instead of trying to resize your pics down to reefcentral's size where they are too tiny to see any details. Both places are free to use.

If you want some soft corals for your 75g let me know and I can frag some for you. I have to cut back some of them about every 2 months or they start battling other corals for space.
 
Congraulations and Welcome to our salty "family". I am glad your Copperband is eating as that is the most challenging part of owning one as we had talked about the meeting. I had hoped to be taking it home with me but I guess the raffle gods had other things in mind. again welcome aboard.
 
It's always great to see new members win raffle items. The level of concern you had for the care of the copperband you won also shows how seriously you take the hobby.

I was a little worried seeing a copperband in the raffle considering what a toughie they are to take care of. Especially with the odds of a potentially new reefer getting it since it "was" a "101" meeting. It's great to hear the one you have is such a hungry hippo and that it's doing so well. It's one of my favorite fish. I tried one, but it didn't make it. Now I'm gun shy about getting another one.

Just in case you can't make the connection, I was the guy behind the raffle table, and Bowman was the gentleman dispensing the helpful feeding info you wanted to know after the meeting. (He's also the guy that cleaned up during the raffle):D
 
Welcome ..... I am also a new member as my wife and I joined fri night also and just so happend to win a really nice Shroom rock ...Power to the noobs had a great time myself ...and im really please to see the younger crowd embracing this hobby !!

why do the raffles if that guy john wins everything all the time? just take his donation and give him everything save the hassle. seems only a small percentage of members actually win something. sounds a little greedy to me.

yeah, i really enjoyed the meeting, especially the presentation on plumbing. i wrote a lot down, and when i set up my 75 i know it will come in handy. we are really worried about the overflow being too noisy, and getting SW on the carpet, so hopefully now well be able to gaurantee that wont happen.

20g sump/fuge
NOVA extreme pro t5 lighting
100+ lbs of LR in dt and rubble in fuge
phosban reactor (someone on SFW reccomended 2, would that be better?)
GFI (dont have my 30 on one, but definately for the 75)
and an octopus in sump skimmer

i also need to buy a refractometer, i just havent gotten around to it yet. i admit im using a hydrometer. :(

i make my own RO/DI water.

If you live near another member with a refractometer you can just mix some water to where you want your salinity measuring with the refractometer and then pour it into your hydrometer and mark a line where your needle lands. Then next time you mix water don't worry about the numbers just shoot for your line and you are good to go.

If you haven't already purchased the Nova fixture you may want to reconsider it. They don't use the best reflectors, they don't use waterproof endcaps and the lights are normally driven. If you look for a used lighting setup you could get a nice MH setup or overdriven T5 with individual reflectors to get the PAR out of the lights and increase efficiency by a LOT over the Nova.

If you haven't heard about overdriving T5 bulbs with an IceCap660 ballast it is something to really consider. I have two 75g tanks with 4 T5 bulbs over them and have clams, SPS, LPS, softies, everything.

Don't be afraid to ask questions and READ READ READ ... reefcentral can save you tons of money in mistakes that others have made.

thanks for the info! yeah, i originally wanted to get MH lighting, but the price and potential need for a chiller made me hesitant. i havent bought the Nova yet, im still looking around, but trying to get a tentative list together.

and thanks for the refracto/hydrometer idea, ill ask around.
