actually ordered a frilly mushroom rock, but the pic on the website DOES not look like what I have. They look sort of like ricordias, but these are my first mushrooms ever so I wouldn't really know. They are smaller than the ricordia yuma that I purchased in the same shipment. Sorry my camera is away till next week.

In any case they are mushrooms of some sort. One of the mushrooms on a rock got cut in half, except it is still attached a bit on one end.

Should I help cut it all the way? Is there anything I can do to help it? Where should I place them? Low flow areas? On the sandbed?

thanks

I'd just put it in a relatively low flow area of the tank and see how things are tomorrow after the lights come on. They are probably shriveled up from shipping and haven't acclimated yet. Let us know how it goes.

no, its definately torn and its not shriveled up, none of them are. They all seem to have acclimated just fine, including the yuma, the braching frogspawn (who has already opend up).

The only thing that hasn't done much is the green star polyps.

GSP can take a while to open up fully so don't worry too much about that. If the mushroom is almost torn in half I'd just finish cutting it in half. You might just end up with 2 mushrooms for the price of one ;)

I had to attack some overgrown mushrooms in my tank with a razor, there being no other way to get them away from my corals. I got most of the ones I was after. But one that was hanging in shreds the day before reconstituted itself and is recovering.

Their regeneration abilities amaze me. I chopped up a small Ricordea florida into 5 very small pieces as an experiment the other day and all 5 have recovered and more than doubled their size in the last 2 weeks.

After I frag my ricks I throw in some extra stronium I have heard that it helps the healing of soft corals. Have been doing this for almost a year and everytime I frag they grow back happy and healthy.
