New Nikon D 60

I bought a new camera it's a Nikon D-60. Before this camera I had point and shoot type cameras. I am going through the manual and trying to figure out all the different settings and what they mean. I was wondering if someone could help me out as far as what settings would be a good starting point to take pictures of my tank. I have metal halide lighting.
I see pictures that other people take and I am amazed. It has the 18-55mm lens and I have a tripod.
Any help is appreciated

You're not going to be able to get as close as some of the pics you see here with that lens, but most of the settings still apply. Read the sticky at the top of the forum page. That should help you get going.

Thanks Jesse, if it was any closer to me it would have bit me in the face. I started checking it out and it looks like it will keep me busy for a while. I'm hoping to play with the new camera over thanksgiving holiday.
Could you recommend a better lens for someone like me who is just starting out.

The lenses made for closeups are called macros or if Nikon they may say micro. You want a magnification of 1 to 1. This tends to be the top of the line, but some by Sigma and Tamron still come close. Somewhere in the 100-150mm range for tanks.
