they are nice, what type of lights do you have? not to start a huge controversy but they look like the need more light.

Not to feed the controversy but...150w 20,000k HQI with 2x96w. 420/460pc. And after the 2 croceas have grown 4 times there original size in the last 3 years, I think there doing just fine.

I agree with a4twenty, those clams are displaying symptoms that would indicate they are searching for more light. If you wish to keep them in this way, that is your reight, but you did ask for comments, and I think his comment is absolutely correct.

do you really think this is normal

this clam and a few others in the photos you posted apear to be on or close to the substrate.

normal mantle extention for a Crocea is more like this

wait, what size tank are these in? I can see the sand near some of the clams in the pictures- And this is 6" inches from the halide? Help us out here- please explain.

I'm no clam expert, but that personally looks like about the worst case of clams reaching for light I've seen.

As well, 150's are not very bright. If they are indeed on the bottom of the tank near the sand as it appears and you have a decent sized tank, that would explain things.

Again, no expert, just my thoughts from what I see.

Some people are too blind to comprehend what you are saying. Clams in captivity for 3 years with 4X growth. Good Job Saltcreep. Dont let the kiddies get you down ! Knowledgable people understand the diversity of marine life.

Shari- That is a ridiculous statement. Even for us "unknoweldgeable" people, as you have called us, the symptoms of mantle overextension are undeniably obvious. Furthermore, some comments made are also questionable. 6 inches from the light, yet on the substrate of a 65 gallon tank? Perhaps in your "educated" state, you can explain that for me, as I am baffled by it.

You should be careful with your name calling. Many of us are quite educated, both through school and practical experience. Perhaps this is something you should consider when someone asks our opinion of something.

that clam definitely does not look "normal" to me, hyperextending. i really doubt you kept that clam in that specific condition for 3 years.

I think the photos are not doing them any good. These guys are huge!! The only one close to the bottom is the max. and he is still small (2.5ish). I will get some scale photos to help. And yes they have always beem there in that spot.. I think the photos from below are making things look strange.

Our thoughts were requested and supplied. As per the rules, please do not stoop to name calling or personal attacks in this forum. It does not benefit anyone.

Personally I find your input a little unnerving, especially considering your occupation. Look at it this way: "Technically" you could indeed keep a tang alive for quite an extended period... in a 15 gallon tank.

Yeah, I like the input but lets keep it nice!!
What do you think Eric? About my 2 Croceas.
If any one was lookin' for light I would think the Max. who is on the bottom would be the one.....Right??

Ryan, it's not the size, angle, or color people are worried about. it's the extension of the clam. You see how far they are stretched away from the shell? The huge V flat shape created as they try to capture as much light as possible? That's a common symptom when clams are reaching extremely far for light due to not having enough. I'm not saying this is exactly the case, but it's probable.

Typically they will be right down on the shell, or with a slight extension depending. One of your pictures looks like it's extended so far, the extension itself is almost as large as the clam! (i.e. if it's a 1" clam, it's reaching almost 1" out of the shell as well).

Take a look at some of the clams in the forums, and have been posted here. Hopefully you see what we mean.

Below are a couple of mine. They are pretty new, so still adjusting.

Although it's closed a bit, personally this one looks the best:

HOLY COW!

That's at least twice as fast as crocea's maximum growth rate in their natural habitat. Are you dosing creatine or something:lol:
