New ponies need a home

hello. i was just asking about the birthing tank. my guy just had ponies and i am not ready to take care of them. i'm new to the hobbie and wasn't expecting to be a grandma. anyways, i'm in the lAX area and my friend said for me to catch them and out them in the net in the water. if anyone would like them, please contact me.

species? it would help for peeps to know, as pelagic vs. benthic fry are different to raise.

Hello. honestly, i dont have a clue. the store i bought it from sold me an orange and gold seahorse. i can send you a pic of them. i was able to separate the ponies and this morning, it looks like one survived. i'm so excited that one made it but very afraid that it won't last.

If the seahorses are small (2" or less) and they only had a handful of babies they are prob. dwarf seahorses (Zots.) Most seahorse species produce hundreds of babies at a time, upwards to over a thousand.

they aren't dwarf seahorses. to me they look exactly like the Brazilian seahorses, but of course i can't confirm cause i'm not an expert. let me see if i can upload a pick of the two seahorses i have.

uploaded the pix to where?

if the SH are indeed H. reidi, which are often reffered to as "Brazilian SH" are, the fry are SUPER difficult to raise.

H. reidi give birth to pelagic fry, which are smaller and cannot hitch from birth. they should also be kept off the surface, as they can snick air and become "floaters" which makes it impossible for them to feed. many peeps rear them in Kriesel tanx, altho it can be done other ways as well.

i clicked my gallery on my post and it pops up. well, unfortunately the one baby that i had this morning didn't make it. i fed it when i went to feed it again, it wasn't moving. poor guy. i'll have to look at the kriesel tank. i have to find a new way to keep the fry. i'd love to be able to raise at leats one. or at least find them a home with someone that can take care of them or it.

silly me...i was looking for a pic or a link in the post. yeppers, your SH are indeed H. reidi (pronounced "REED-eye").

until you find your "groove" with reidi, you'll likely go thru a LOT of broods before you have any success, so if you decide to run with it, don't get discouraged.

IMHO, a true Kriesel isn't necessary. i think that often folks use a bit too much current which requires the fry to expend more energy swimming than growing. a simple 10 gal with a surface ripple (from an airline or sponge filter) is just as effective to keep the SH off the surface.
