Ok so I'm starting a new project in hope to breed my 2 onyx clowns. I have a 12 gallon nano cube with 2 clowns I've had for about a year in various tanks. they haven't fully paired yet because there both around the same size, but I'm hoping one I set my lights up to summer lighting they will begin breeding. My lfs told me he would sell me a 120 w metal highlide compact for a 12" nano cube do you guys think this is to much light or any other ideas on light? Any feedback is appreciated.

If you don't have corals or nems in the tank you don't need any special lighting. Any old bulb will do. Just put it on a timer.

... My lfs told me he would sell me a 120 w metal highlide compact for a 12" nano cube .....

There is a misunderstand somewhere.
It is Metal Halide, the salt of metal and highly corrosive halide gas. This vapor emit light when superheated in the Metal Halide bulb. The mixture of which metal, which gas and how much determine the spectrum of the bulb.

For reef tank, these bulbs cone in with the following wattage's: 70, 150, 175, 250, 400. Grow lights also have higher wattage 1000W.

There is no 120 W that I know about. Also there is no compact MH. These bulbs are super hot and emit plenty of Ultra Violet and need to have adequate shield.

Put MH light on a 12 gal cube without adequate cooling system will overheat the nano tank. We are not sure of what light you are getting because you don't know yourself. Clowns do not require high light. Corals and anemones does. From what you wrote, I do not think you are ready for a host anemone. Don't get one, especially for a 12 g tank.
