My new puffer fish died 4 days after I got him from my Local LFS. After he died the rest of my tank got flukes & fiun rot.

Before I bought him the rest of my fish were healthy & fine so I'm wondering if the puffer was sick when I got him.

Does anybody know how long it takes for a puffer to surcome to sickness? I think I bought him and dind't see any sigh of illness untill he was already dead.

Cheers

Pulp Fishin,

Generally speaking, the first fish to die from a given problem was the first one to have the problem, therefore, if the puffer died before any of the other fish were even sick, and you only had it four days, then it is a pretty safe bet that it had flukes when you bought it. However, there is never any expectation that fish you buy from anyone are disease free - always quarantine everything.

My LFS quarantines their fish for at leats 2 weeks before they put them out for sale and I saw him there another 2 weeks so I knwo for a fact my LFS had him for just short of a month before I bought it and then 4 days later hes floating belly up!

Sorry to say but quarantining him yourself for another two weeks (4 days in this case) would have made all the difference. Sorry to hear about your loss and fish illnesses.

Yeah in hindsight it was a mistake to trust that was enough. But hindsight is funny leik that at the time I had never had any problems before but now I have major losses I must deal with.

RIP 1 year old liofish
RIP 4 day old puffer
RIP 1 & 1.25 year old starfish

Whoa! Wait a sec...

You lost 2 starfish at the same time? That wasn't due to flukes and has nothing to do with the pufferfish dying. When a fish tank has invertebrates and fish dying at the same time, its usually an environmental problem, because they don't share any diseases.

p.s. - if the store doesn't treat with praziquantel or other antihelmenthic during their two week quarantine, it wouldn't be as effective as it could be, meaning that it wouldn't remove flukes from the fish.

Yeah, I would agree. Could be water parameters or when you put the Pufferfish in your tank, it might have caused a cycle problem...

Check your water parameters, I'd suggest.

Sorry to hear about the instant losses.
