New Purple Gig.....

He ate the snail now he is just a little bigger :)

Thanks Minh.. I feed this guy all the time, but this particular instance was a scary one.. Never seen'em look so almost deflated... I'm extra sensitive because this purple gig has not been medicated, although it has been almost seven months now in my care.

Either way I'll get an updated picture.. such a nice deep purple color. It's amazing to see the transition from the bleached white Gig I had in February to this!

BTW, aren't you on vacation?! :-)

Hope everyone is having a great long weekend (US folks).... In my news..

The purple monster is back y'all! He's HUGE.... What a difference 7 months makes.

Super long column tucked into this rock...

Looks great! My purple gig sometimes stretches out on its column as well. Not sure why it does it, but after its fed it settles down. Snails seem to cause the same problem with my gigs. I think they eat anything that falls into them and is recognized as food, regardless of if it has a shell. I think they ingest the whole thing but have a hard time pushing out the shell. Since it probably takes a lot of energy, I'm guessing they constrict a bit, which causes the reduction in size.

Thanks guys... It was scary to wake up and see a "deflated" looking gig, but now it's back to normal.. in fact, a bit bigger... This guy dominates the entire left side of my tank.

So it's been a while without an update and I felt it was necessary... Everything is great with the gig, getting larger, eating like a pig and settling in.. There are a lot of new baby tents growing in several spots that were bald originally, and in time these will fill in.. Don't mind the coraline all over the front glass, I need to work on that at some point.

Some pictures of our Onyx pair enjoying their home..

It rally does look happy. Glad to see it doing well. Obviously the clowns like it too.

How much/big are you feeding it?

Recently I have been alternating with the feedings.. One week I will do a frozen krill soaked in selcon, the entire thing for each gig, and then the other option is actually cod that was soaked in selcon and frozen.. The cod pieces are a 1"x1" cube, the krill is whatever size it comes.

They eat a lot, and they grow like crazy... Honestly, I'm actually surprised at how good these pictures turned out, I actually got some nice up close shots. Usually my pictures suck.. a lot.. :-) Might have a new background picture.

The purple has gained a lot of its color back from the first day it came into our tank huh?

With out a doubt, I am glad to see it looking better. I can not wait until it is colored out.

I just posted some pictures I took tonight (170 of them) in my build thread. Plus a link to the gallery.

My 7 inch Gigantea ate a 8 inches Abalone. Indigestion for several days and puke 2/3 of the abalone up a day or two later. I got pictures of it somewhere. In my Petco Gigantea thread, I think.

Oh i saw that saga.. that's wild.. Glad it's OK.. the gig that is.

So it's been a while since at update.. I was walking by the tank and thought the posture was particularly cool looking. Still gets fed selcon soaked food 2-3 times a week, and is still HUGE. Lots of balding areas still that are slowly growing tentacles, but doing amazing. Fully colored up and easily 12" when it chooses to expand.

Thank you... there are so many little tentacles that are popping up all over the place, but just growing slowly.. This guy needs to eat every other day I think until he has all of the bald spots recovered.. Either way, it's a beautiful gig.

Maybe I glazed over where you explained, if so, my apologies...

How did the balding happen? Did it come that way, or did it regress while you had it? Was it localized to one area, or one patch, or did it spread? Any other details on the balding of yours? Anything you noticed that is worth mentioning? It doesn't look bald in any of your pics, that's why I'm curious.
And, have you gone any length of time with NO feedings? Or do you always feed?

It gradually showed itself as the gig settled in and got bigger... When you sit and stare at it, there is one little section starting from the mouth and going out a bit that isn't just a row it's like a nice wide patch and there are others as well so certainly not localized. This guy came bald in a lot of spots, and became even more bald as he expanded, got comfortable and got huge.. What I noticed was, none of the bald spots did anything, until it completely colored up. Now, that it is completely colored up, the baby tentacles are growing EVERYWHERE... in the bald spots, and I'll even see random ones in rows that I think are fully populated.. It's easier to see in person, sorry, hard to capture with pictures.. I probably notice more because I stare at the thing on a daily basis.

For the longest time I was feeding every single day on schedule in the morning, then went to every other day because it blew up in size overnight, just like the green. Now I feed target feed both 2-3 times a week.. if I kept feeding daily it would take up the entire tank in no time, but at the same time I want to provide it good fuel to grow those tentacles back, so I'm torn..

There was a period of a week or two I got lazy and forgot and seemed like it was ****ed off, so I started feeding again... .maybe it was just my head, but seems like this is a hungry fella.

edit: If you look in the first picture, about 2 o'clock.. you can see the baldness.. it's like that whole patch area, and more toward the mouth, not anywhere is it bald on the outside or even from the middle out.

Wow.. I haven't updated in a LONG LONG time.

Updates.. tank no longer has cyano and nutrient issues. It's now clean, almost too clean, stocked with LE SPS, and, well you guessed it, our purple monster. Still going nice and strong, color is better than ever and hasn't moved. Our Onyx pair loves their home.

The biggest difference since last time was the removal of our Green Gaddoni... These two must not have gel'd because the purple is happier than ever after the green was removed. The green thankfully lives a town away, and is doing great in his home. The purple gig will be with us for two years come this February.
