New Purple Tang

So, after the failed attempt to pair my potter's angel with a female, I lost my beloved Potter's angel to my maroon clown's midnight aggression. As a result, I've decided to get the one fish I've truly adored since grade school. A Purple Tang! After searching online for the best deals, I found one locally that I could not pass up. After bringing him home and acclimating him, he's colored up completely and enjoying his new home. (He was in a 90 gallon before my system)

Before some people jump on me for my tank size, I understand and have read all the information I could find regarding the purple tangs. Including aggression. Therefore, I will not be adding any more fish into my setup. (A 120 gallon tank). As of now, there is only a melenarus wrasse in there and that'll remain his only tankmate. The Maroon clown unfortunately, will not be united with the other fish and will be sold within the coming days.. In addition, I'll be removing some rock to allow for more swimming room and better flow throughout the tank to make the tang feel more comfortable.

He's about 3 inches and absolutely flawless. It was not my intention of coming here to start arguments or what not, but instead to share my excitement. Right now he's eating NLS pellets and nori soaked in selcon. If anyone has any advice or comments, feel free to post. I appreciate all comments

Got any pics? LOL. Congrats on the new fish!

P.S. I would think you could definitely have more than the two fish in a 120.

As of now, nope haha. The lights went out earlier tonight, and I've been in class all day..:deadhorse1: I'll be sure to get some up within the next few days!

As far as other tank mates, I don't know if I want to chance it at this point. At the most it would only be a blenny. Possibly a Midas Blenny or something of the sort :bounce3:

Purple tangs are soo much fun! They are gorgeous fish :) I had the opportunity to pick up a 4-5" one for $100. It's being held in a small tank right now...oops but will go into my 150g after the more peaceful fish are added first.

Can't wait to see your pictures!!!!!! :D

I love my purple tang, he is gorgeous and full of character... i only keep 2 fish in my display as well, a sixline with the purple... even though i have a 75 and u have a 120, im honestly not sure i would have anymore.fish even if i did have a 120 as well... i have 2 great fish right now, both healthy and content.... sure i need a bigger display and i am working on it, but he was very sick and malnourished in a 30g when i got him, so it could be worse... great fish, u will love it once it.settles in... jus be sure to have flow, plenty of oxygen, and feed him plenty, as they have a very fast and high metabolism, and a vorqcious appetite...

Thanks for all the comments, I'll get photos up later today. The purple has to have one of the most outgoing personalities I've seen in a fish! There seems to be no shyness, which is surprising for a fish that's been in the tank for only 2 days so far.

Pallobi- Couldn't agree more with you. Such a beautiful fish deserves the best. (Along with any fish for that matter). Glad to hear you were able to rescue yours from a 30 gallon. I plan to put a few more powerheads into the tank to insure plenty of water movement. I'm running a Royal-Exclusive 200 cone skimmer which I believe will keep the tank oxygenated pretty well.

Glad you were able to find one locally, its always nice to see the fish in person before spending your money. I think it will be fine in a 120

I think it's awesome when people get "That one FISH" that does it for you. Sure you don't want to add another fish.....maybe an Angel or Butterfly? IMHO you have the room and 3 is a good number.

Any pics???

Hey hows the elegance doing?

Doing fairly well, it still doesn't open up completely but I believe it may be from too much light. This weekened I'll be removing some rock so I'll be able to find a more shaded region for him.

I'll get pics up in a moment, it's been a long day of classes.. :sad2: I may possibly get a blenny or something of the sort but no more large fish for sure. I would hate to stress out the purple tang as well as the wrasse that's in with him

here he is! It's the best I could do last night with my cell phone. The tank lights had just turned off so I had to turn them back on. So the corals were already closing up a bit. He's a fast little guy, wouldn't stay still for the photo..

Thanks! He's been adjusting well the tank. Still eats like a champ. Now that people are saying I should get something else to coexist with the two fish I already have has gotten me thinking.. Although, I do not want to test the tang's aggression..

I was thinking MAYBE a goby or something, but a dwarf angel has crossed my mind. What are everyone's thoughts?

What are our thoughts huh? I love stocking tanks :)

If it were my tank, I'd maybe try a flame angel. Beautiful and a good color contrast to what's already in the tank. Here's fantastic article that talks about where to get them, tankmates, etc

keep in mind that angels may eat corals. If you can qt them and get them nice and fat, used to your foods before they go in you generally have a better chance...but each fish is his own :)

Also I'd think about the canary wrasse. H chrysus. It's a bright yellow fish that will also contrast well and does well in captivity. Also, Melanurus wrasse's are quite peaceful and yours should allow the introduction.

What do you think?

Thanks for the info Korrine! I'm considering maybe a multicolor angel. I understand the risk of them nipping corals, but I think I'll be taking your advice about fattening him up  From what I hear, flame angels tend to be the ones that are most likely to nip corals:sad2:

Purple's definitely have personality....I just got my purple tang about 4 days ago and so far he has tons more personality then my yellow and hippo. Both of those guys are great, but are scared of their own shadows. My new purple comes to the top like a dog when I come to the tank to feed. Only fish I have as well that actually comes to the front of the tank when you're looking at him instead of running behind the rock :-) We actually set up a whole new tank a few months ago just for a purple and some of my clowns...Good luck with yours!

I am getting a 5 inch purple tang in the morning that I purchased from a member.. Lets hope me makes the trip through Fedex ok !!! He will be held in QT for a few weeks with a Hippo tang, Flame Angel, Melanurus Wrasse and a little blue damsel. I also have a powder Blue , Lg Blond Naso and a copper band and 2 ocellaris clowns waiting to be picked up. I also have plans for a clown tang, yellow tang, and an emperor angel jv. All of these will be going into my 210 reef. Obviously I can put all of these in the 55 at once so I am staging slowly overtime.

I won't keep a tank without a purple tang. nicest fish in the genus and a great fish for a tank that size.
