New Skimmer for Larger Aquarium

Ok,

I was trying not to start a new thread but am not getting the information I need to make an eduated decision. I have been in the middle of a tank breakdown for three or four months, and in the middle of that breakdown got to upgrade to a 210-220 gallon tank. Meaning that I once again need to upgrade my skimmer. This tank will be totally diffrent than my last. Its much more thought out.

What i'm looking for is a powerful skimmer that can process most if not all of the water going through it. I understand this may not be possible but I would really like to get as close as possible. While I like the effciency of a NW, i'm really looking into a beckett. To be more specific, i'm looking at the MR-3R Dual Stack by MRC aquatics. I will be taking the advice of some folks on RC and will be relying on the skimmer not sand and live rock this time to process the water.

I already know this skimmer is way overkill for my aquarium. I realize that there are smaller skimmers that will perform well and will do what it needs to for that size tank. However, I do plan on having a massive bio-load in this tank. It will be SPS all the way.

I am aware of the powerful pump that is required to run it. The way I figure it, my old tank had three sequence pumps running it. One being a hammerhead, and the others 4300's. Since I'm going without the closed loop and sea swirls this time, and elminating that pump and the sea swirls it will be close to a wash for electrical consumption. I will be using just one 4300 for the return, and one pump for the skimmer. The rest of the flow will be provided with Vortech's.

Now that the background is out of the way. My questions are these.

How overkill is it really?

Will it do what I think it will do, which is process majority of the water, being fed to it via the overflows?

Given the pump noise, how loud is the beckett itself?

I plan to plumb it externally to my sump, the output will be at the mid to lower range of the sump. If the sump is designed to have a constant level in that compartment, will the backpressure effect the skimmer? I have heard mixed things about this one so any help will be appreciated.

Lastly, with it being a recirculating skimmer, and external to the sump how bad or what are the chances of overflow? Do the lids lockdown? I'm not experienced with this type of skimmer, as it will be my first big skimmer and am not sure how it is designed.

reeflo orca skimmer rated for 1000g and it is the same price as most 300gallon quality skimmers

plus its very energy efficent something that becketts are not saving you hundreds a year in power bills

My power bill would not be effected. I'm losing pumps with my new setup, while yes I would be replacing those pumps with a larger pump for the beckett. However overall it would be a wash "power consumption wise".

You will see my post on the thread

I don't doubt for a min. that is one tough skimmer. However it is new and I am very reluctant on buying a newer skimmer. People only started purchasing them a month or so ago. I want something tried and tested this time. I have been burnt one way or another with the newest of the new equipment. Whether it be customer service, poor design, or somthing totally outhere that only presents itself with just the right conditions or 2% of the people who buy it. I am always in that 2%.

I have been a fan of sequence pumps for years, and would recommend anyone to but one. However, I'm not crazy about import stuff. Not the whole buy in the US thing, but the plumbing is usually metric and it makes it a PITA to fool with down the road.

Basically, I agree it looks to be an awesome skimmer. But I'm looking for somthing tried and tested this time. I'm going to be dropping some cash on my new setup, and am counting on my skimmer to be a beast.

How much water are you processing per hour through that thing, I remember reading that the recommend was like 400gph. I want to run closer to three time my water volume, which would be closer to 700gph. I would really like to dedicate one overflow just to feed the skimmer.

reeflo orca skimmer rated for 1000g

and its under 1500...

why do you need to run your whole tank thru the skimmer 7 times an hour seems excessive.

i just dont know of another skimmer that performs like that for that money.

BK 200 mini should be pretty good for that tank if you ever want an in sump skimmer. 40 watts used and costs $1099 over at premiumaquatics. I was planning on a BK mini but it would barely be able to handle my tank since I want my tank to be highly stocked and SPS dominated.

If you are looking at MRC - Consider the Precision Marine Bullet 3 or larger as well.

I was a HUGE MRC fan. Loved them. Ran MR-1 through MR-3 Dual beckett however recently was in the market for a new skimmer so and went the path of Precision Marine due to price. This thing is SICK! The single beckett PM Bullet 3 crushes any dual beckett I ran from MRC. I coundlt believe it. Plus it seems that the PM is much more stable compared to MRC which is real touchy and will break action when you breath at the tank....

My tank is a 210 SPS Reef Tank with Large Angels, Triggers, Tangs, wrasses etc...

7 times an hour???

don't know where u got that. Its a 210 display, and around 60-70sump. So its close to 300, at 700 that just a little over twice per hour.

Did I miss something?

but once again, it just too new. I like the idea of having a NW, but there isn't enough information out there yet.

How does it react to your hands in the water?

o' crap........ i'm going to have to add more lights........ that's not good......

Now I may have to kill the dual beckett aspirations. IF i can't figure out how to get better spread, I'm going to have to add another 250. CRAP!!!!!

I was so close to ordering something this week....

I would go with the Sequence skimmer. Yes the skimmer may be new but the pump "the heart of any skimmer" is not. It is tried and true. For the price and effcient this skimmer is makes it a winner in my book. I would choose this skimmer over the famous Bubble king.

please no offense but are you a owner? or just a wannabe owner....

too many times do I hear people recommending skimmers that do not own them. So from now I on I ask.

Why would you choose this over the BK.... Price? because you can get a BK250 close to the same as one of those.

Well i do own the skimmer and i have owned a few in my reefing history. From Euroreef for my 180 gallon -loved it- to a tunze 9010 for my 40 gallon -overrated- to a pmbullet xl2 that was on my 330 gal - good for the price but was not keeping up with my tanks demands. So i started shopping for a new skimmer.
I was caught between H&S or a Deltec and was trying to chase down a used one.

I would agree that the skimmer is new on the market but the pump is not and the design is good. I would be happy to share any pics or real user info you may want on the skimmer.

I forgot I also have had a remora skimmer with skimmer box another over rated skimmer, and a octopus 150 ok skimmer better if you mod the heck out of it and alsways noisy.

I totally agree Sequence is great. Have been a big fan for a long time.

But here is another OEM skimmer that is all metric correct? How's the build quality? weak? durable? what commercial skimmer does it compare to?

is it actually 32" high? a little more a little less?

I want too know how people are comparing this to a BK? Cuz If I decide to go needle wheel again it going to be BK/H&S/maybe this.

What is effcient flow through rate of this skimmer. I saw that it can go to 800+ gallons. However it isn't effcient there.... What is?

If I can figure out my light situation then I'm almost certain I'm going to go with the MRC Dual Stack.
