New Skimmer

Well, I just ordered the big 3 pump octopus skimmer off the old asm site. It is a 12 inch body with 3 recirculation pumps. It will be replacing my asm G5 which has an 8 inch body and 2 recirc pumps.

I don't really need a new skimmer, as the ASM easily handles my current tank, but I wanted to see what kind of value the octopus skimmer would provide. I might end up putting the Eheim needlewheels on it once they come out, thereby getting a "Deltec" at less than half price.

I will post pics once it arrives and keep everyone updated on what may prove to be a great bargain. If it ends up being junk, I will let you know that as well.

Threadwheel moding the stock Octo pump can pull more air than the Ehiem for $3 vs. $300 for two eheims.

Did you get a chance to see HDTV guy's 3 pump octo. That was sick that thing was pulling straight mud.

Well, the skimmer arrived on Tuesday. Everything looked great and the packaging was excellent. I put the thing together and filled it up to do a leak test. As luck would have it, this little piece that connects the pump to the body leaked.

I am in the process of getting a new one. The worst part of this skimmer is that the plumbing is metric. That means that I can't easily obtain plumbing to exit the skimmer, nor can I simply replace the leaking piece with easily obtainable local parts.

Here is a pic of the new skimmer next to my old ASM G5. The octopus is a 12 inch body and is 32 inches tall. The ASM is an 8 inch body and is 36 inches tall.

On the right hand side you can see my frag tank in the making.

looks awesome, just thought of another way to plumb to take the weight off the bulkhead. Put the BV in the tank and just remove the end union then use 1" spaflex to the skimmer.

I'm sure, once you get it set in place I figure the most that will happen is it will just stick to that position if anything

If the metric output plumbing on the octo is the same size as my smaller octo. 1 1/4" PVC slips inside of the metric. It is even tight enought to solvent weld too.

Dumb questions but the instructions are pretty weak, are you sure you have all the o-rings in place on the leak?

The leak is between the elbow and the pvc glued inside it. I wish it were just the o-rings.

Thanks for the tip about the output plumbing, I will try that out tomorrow.

Where did you get the skimmer?

I got the skimmer from marine solutions. Here is a link to the page i ordered from http://www.marinesolutionsinc.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_35&products_id=97 For now I cannot yet say whether I would order from them again. I have been trying to get that elbow replaced since Tuesday night, and it still hasn't shipped yet, after half a dozen emails, a phone call, and me offering to pay to have it overnighted.

I wouldn't order from them. If you read the Reef Octo main run on thread here marinesolutions has not had the best cutstomer service rep.

I think Mthedude waited like 3 weeks for his skimmer.

Wow a $800 skimmer huh? Being i would have to work almost 3 weeks just to pay for one, i think some of you guys are crazy.
Also, im wondering how you still have wives or gf's after making a buy like that. Mine freaked out after i bought a $50 skimmer.

Im just jealous i guess.....

;)

I don't want to start a huge discussion here but why did you just not buy a Deltec? For just a few hundred more you could have gotten one and you would not have to mod anything. I know you had some differences with them in the past and I think they are ridiculously over priced too but I can say....they work.

The comparably sized Deltec was over $3000. At 4 times the price for the same sized body, those Deltec eheims would need to be infused with magic to make it worthwhile. I also know that the mark-up on the 1003 is 50% over retail in Germany. I could never bring myself to give Deltec Doug $1000. That is more than the price of the skimmer I bought.

Also I saw first hand that JJ's octopus skimmer performed well, so I know it works. The build quality of the octopus is also comparable to Deltec's. Needlewheel designs aren't exactly rocket science. From what I have seen a bigger body is almost always better. If the pumps end up being a limiting factor in the future, I can always swap them out with the new eheim needlewheels.

Plus with all the money I saved, I am going to buy a bunch a frags from Atlantis and Liveaquaria. If anybody wants free shipping on some frags off either of those sites, just let me know.
