To ease the tension and kind of take this in another direction, seeing the above post, towards the end, I'm left wondering what LFS in the area have a live guarantee?
I think I've seen one shop, don't remember who, but it was on their flier. What shops in our area have it? I'll be very surprised if more than just that one have it, as I thought the deal with LFSs is that there is no live guarantee and the internet places can do it because of the profit from the volume of sales they do versus local stores.
having some experience in working in two LFS as well as lots of hobby expereience, i have to say your right. most stores will not give a "live guarantee" its very difficult for them to do so, however from the stores i have worked at. the owners are more the understanding. in one of the stores i worked at the owner was very understanding to his customers. and on quite a few occasion replaced a fish or sold a replacement at half off, however there was rules to receive this treatment. he clearly explained to customers that you should have your water tested before purchasing a fish to see if your tank is capable, as well as discuss with the educated employees, your system and tank inhabitants. then after a fish or invert is purchased, say the fish died that night or next day, you could bring the fish in with another water sample. then further action was taken at the owners discretion.
and i would have to say im sure the same would go for the LFS im currently working at.
its impossible to give a LIVE GUARANTEE, sadly many people in this hobby rush into things just like anything else, forgetting that they are dealing with living creatures. i have had customers ask me if a fish in a tank was salt or fresh, fair enough. then ask if a fish in that same tank was salt or fresh, i bit my tongue and told them again. i had people come in refuse any information i had for them and said they knew what they were doing, bought a saltwater fish, put it in there freshwater tank and demand there money back after it died. i had people take shrimp and inverts home, and after being tought proper acclimation procedure, they would still just straight dump them into the tank because they had somewhere to be and couldnt wait for them to acclimate, then say the store owed them another because it died. those are just a few. its shocking what many people do in this hobby. and because of that, i would be surprised to find any store that had a true 'guarantee
my advice is to find a lfs that fits your needs, not necessairly the best prices in town, but one that takes the time to get to know you and your aquarium, as well as take part in conversation expanding both the experience and knowledge of the customer and LFS employees. in the long run it will be a very beneficial relationship between you and the store, as im sure many members of the club have found already.
* its good to hear hes back up and running, ill have to stop by once fragstravaganza starts back up
