Thanks Jawbone. I have a lot to learn. I think I have a decent eye but that's not enough...obviously.lol

My software that came with the T3i won't work on my Mac,it says my OS isn't the right one, errr. I think I have OS v10.4 ....So I'm shooting jpegs until I can figure out what's wrong or buy different software. The simpler program the better.

I'm trying to learn the camera but haven't read the manual yet. I know...
I want to get the best macro type photos I can get with the included 18-55mm IS II kit lens. Good focal point and back ground & fore ground blur is what I'm shooting for now.

So far its been a blast using the new camera and I'm even thinking about taking a photography class. I love how photography and Reefing go together so well! Its a shame more people don't post their awesome pics.

If there's any good links that you have on hand for some pointers and tips I"ll read them. If you see something in my sample pics that I should work on let me know. I cropped them to be able to upload to imageshack (they originally are too large) and resized them to 800x600 (I think) for message boards like R.C.

Looks pretty good for just starting. I would love to get a macro lens to get better pics

Nice looking pictures. I got my wife a 5D Mark3 for XMas and she finds all kind of tutorial videos on youtube and the internet just by doing a search with the camera model number. I have even found a couple specific to aquarium photography. I'm sure you will also get some good info on this site. I have improved by trial and error. Use a tripod, remote shutter, turn off pumps and powerbeads, and make sure the glass is really clean. I only keep about 10-15% of the shots I take. JP

Try to shoot perpendicular to the glass which should get you rid of the distortion in the pics. I always try to rest my lense against the glass (watch out not to scratch the glass or the lense though) if my object is far enough for my lense to focus. if not I try to use a tripod an position my lense perpendicular tot he glass. It's a bit more difficult when shooting with free hands to stay perpendicular.
You can also underexpose your shots a tiny bit cause they're a bit overexposed.
A faster shutter speed or using flash would help freeze soft corals that are swaying like the clown shot. watch out on your focus point like in the clown shot yo ufocused a bit to the back and in the zoo shot I believe you focused a bit to the front.

No FW! ;)

I was going to add, use manual focus. It's hard to use on fish though cause they are always moving. You should have a continuous auto focus option which may help. Always try to get the eyes in focus.

Thanks for the replies & critiques guys!

First, thank you for telling me what you think, its going to help me.

I try to keep the shots parallel(ish) to the glass but since I'm shooting by hand and am (at times) following a fish I try to shoot with a high shutter speed so it won't blur the subject. I'm going back and forth between using live mode on my LCD screen and the eye piece but I'm having some issues with both, trying to get a good focus is somewhat difficult but I always use manual zoom so I am to blame if its out of focus. Maybe its my eyes but the eyepiece seems harder to me...I need to work on the focus adjustments more.
I just came home from Walmart and picked up a $15 targus 67" monopod. I am 6'4" so I figured this would be good for hiking in the woods and whatnot, I just measured my tanks and I am gonna get a tri-pod that will extend to near my needs, even though a cheap 50" tripod will work for my tanks, I think I'd be disappointed in the quality.
I will work on my settings, the FTS & paly shot was shot my first day and the cichlids & clown pic are fom the other day.
I will keep at it and try a tripod and other techniques and settings, along with taking more pictures (in RAW soon) and getting a better exposure & focus.
Thanks !
