New T5 Tek Lights are in

Check out the new lighting. These units will be suspended on light movers, 2 per system, moving back and forth on the depth of my LPS/softies coral systems (which are 5'x10'). I will also mount 2 of them on my QT system currently online.

I was/am impressed with the shear amount of light coming out of these things - very intense. I will put a Lux meter under one and compare it to the 250 halides I currently have over the QT to get a better idea on intensity. Also, no fans - dissipates heat through the top of the body. This is the 4', 8x54 watt model.

I have been running the 6X54w version of this over a 55gal mixed reef for a year now. And I love it.

I get bulbs through Reefgeek.com for a bit more variety. I am currently running something like this, forget the actual names, but can look...

Super Actinic
Purple
1200k
10k
Purple
Super actinic

Gives me about a 14k coloration.

I have a couple of zoanthids that were under 20k 250w halides for months and were still brown, but are showing some color under my T5's.

I have been having great luck keeping Acros, but not so much luck with montis. Which I think is a flow problem, not a lighting problem.

But I love these lights.

I can't wait to see these things mounted under the gantry, creeping ever so slowly over the tank like some kind of space equipment.

Supa nice!!
Hey Mike since that's the config I'm planning on for my 75 and it looks like the bulbs are packed in as tight as possible what is the width of that system?
I want to make sure 8 bulbs with reflectors won't be wider than my tank..

Just dont show the result from the LUX meter to dots this weather's dreary enough and dont want to send him over the edge ;)

I noticed you have a 50/50 split. You may find a nice coloration from 5 blus and 3 days. Or if your pretty happy with the spectrum output but just want to tweak it ever so lightly more to the blue side, you can simply swap the placement of the bulbs so that the blue bulbs are on the outside and the whites are on the inside. You might be amazed at the difference just moving bulbs around front to back can create.

Anyway, glad to see a silver lining on your recent cloud Mike :)

Very nice Mike. I had a tek 4 x 54w and really liked it. Did you build the light mover yourself? I think that one over my new tank might be a good idea. I have been thinking about getting solatubes, but a light mover might work well and maybe be less expensive?

Looks very nice Mike! Hopefully I will be able to check it out some day.

Light movers are sweet! what system are you using?

Ha! It should be pretty cool in a geeky kind of way.

The light mover was my idea. It was inspired from my younger years of doing indoor horticulture :bum:

I am in negotiations with Jerry at Aggramovers who distributes some nifty units.

What really sold me with these models is according to the pics on their wesite, they can actually be ridden. Oh hell yeah, you KNOW I will be looking at my corals from a whole new point of view. Strap in the harness and it will be like I am flying over a reef! ;)

The width is 19". You are more than welcome to come over and steal one of these units for awhile to, um, 'study' them to get ideas on how to build your Funman Light unit from the freebies you just picked up. I have 7 here, and will not need them all for awhile.

Dude, I'm gettin' one of those.

Oh wait! Just had a brilliant idea... how much would you pay for a ride on one of them? You can be superman style, inches off a reef in the comforts of my shop. I'll even turn off some of the lights so you don't get T5-burned while you ride. I can even give out tee-shirts "I rode the wave at CalCRC," with a pic of your face face like the ones they take at the amusement parks when you head down the steep hills on the roller coaster. Like this--> :eek1:

Ha!!!

I may just take you up on that Mike.
I'd just like to see how they acomplished the "task" :)
Since that tank won't have any water in it (for quite some time), I won't need bulbs or anything.

Lol, Mike has just combined the tanning salon with the amusment park.
All, you need now is to add a good massage therapist, in a giant Nemo mascot outfit

Mike knows every good massgae shop in town  I just hope the light story has a happy ending and no one gets hurt. That said...I will ride the other side of the ballast from Steve so we can weight test it.

Mike,
Have you thought about putting an empty tank of just water at the end where you can let go and plunge into the water. Think of Stalone on a rip cord in that movie Cliff Hanger.

Plunge into water off a ripcord on a light mover? Hell no... that would just be plain rediculous.

Now... if it were filled with Jello. heh heh heh ;)
