New Tangs Checking Each Other Out (Black/Purple/Yellow/Yellow Bellied Blue)

Thanks guys, you def. think it's from fighting?

Also was watching them a bit more and saw the Tomini come out and body slam the Purple and Yellow Tangs.

I guess it's the instigator... Maybe it has become territorial in the tank while it was by itself. Esp. the left side where he has always hung out...

Yes, I think both the fin and the tail injury are from fighting. Injuries on the body usually turn white like that. They heal surprisingly quick though. Tomini probably wasn't expecting company of 3 zebrasomas LOL. Ultimately, in a tank that size they should be able to work things out eventually.

... and a soon to be super laid back Juv. Chevron :/

Guess I need a lot more fish before I think about an adding a Naso or Acan. Tang or two... not enough things to diffuse the situation.

Should I use 3 rocks with Nori versus 2 like I'm using now?

Guess this kind of proves it can just be the down to the individual fish when it comes to aggression...

Tomini's are always referred to as a very docile tang.

I was worried about the Black and Yellow. The Purple is small, so wasn't too worried.

I've had the Yellow for years and he's pretty aggressive in my opinion. Now it's weird, the Yellow now seems to be one of the most laid back fish.

Was amazing too, the Black and Purple were losing their color in QT, now are nice and vibrant (black, not really vibrant, but dark).

Also the Purple seemed a bit special in QT. He would flip out if you came by the tank, would twitch, go try to dig himself into the tank corners. Now he's all social and you can walk right up to the tank and he just sits there and goes about his way.

BTW: How much of a .9 oz sheet of nori should I feed them per day?

5 Tangs all between 2.5-4"

They make short work out of like a 1/3-1/4 sheet...

Agree. Adding more fish will spread some of that aggression around. Plus, your yellow/purple/black combo are more likely to start focusing on each other more.

Never had one, but I've never heard of them referred to as aggressive. I would say one of your zebras taught him a hard lesson and he'll steer clear from now on.

I feed three large tangs one sheet per day - half a sheet in the morning and another after work. That way they can always graze between big meals.

How much of a sheet should I give these five each day?

Better to feed in the morning than in the evening?

Also, might try a third rock.

We'll see how much Nori is left in the evening, can adjust after that.

Hopefully if they're eating all day they won't be so ****ed with each other...

I tried to break up some of the tension by putting three rocks with Nori in this morning. Also upped the Nori to about 2/3rds of a sheet.

Naturally all the tangs flocked over to where the Tomini hangs out and started on that rock first... maybe a dominance thing? I'm going to eat your food first?

I'll see how much nori is left at lunch time, then in the evening to see if I need to adjust how much to put in the tank.

Should the nori last all day?

I will then feed in the evening a little Mysis, Formula 1/2 Flakes and/or Spectrum Pellets. Just mix those up or use them all, just depends on how busy I am on each day.

New Tangs Checking Each Other Out (Black/Purple/Yellow/Yellow Bellied Blue)

Suggest to get an XL isolation box for the most aggressive one and let him sit there for a few days.

Came downstairs and noticed all the Tangs on the other side of the tank (not where the Tomini hangs out) swimming together and not really showing aggression.

I grabbed my phone and they got a bit flashy again and took off to the other side of the tank.

Hopefully they are working it out a little bit. I haven't seen the Tomini on the right side of the tank since the other tangs went in...

Seems like the aggression is gone.

They are all swimming together and all fins and scratches are healed.

Here is a little video of them going through some flakes/pellets after eating nori all day...

470 is plenty of space to spread out the aggression. Happy to hear no casualties :)

Gives me a little more hope going forward :)

I'm a little worried about the little Chevron that'll be going in to the tank in about a week. His QT was delayed a bit since he arrived with a bite wound.

I'm just going to put him in right at lights out and hope he does OK with these guys.

He's the smallest by far, just smaller than the Purple Tang. I'm guessing they'll pick on him for a day or two, hopefully it goes away like it did this round.

The Chevron is eating extremely well in my old dirty display tank. He must love it in there. I'll get him nice and fat before putting him in the tank, just in case the others keep him away from food for a day or two...

Things will get even better once algae starts to grow on your rockwork. Then they'll be busy grazing during the day.

I've noticed that Red Sea tangs seems to be quite aggressive, and size isn't a factor. I have a small purple tang that bosses around my Maculiceps. In my previous tank I had a Sohal and it ran the show.

Once you add other fish I think you'll find aggression to be even less of an issue. What other types of fish are you planning to add?

Other fish of size would be:
Crosshatch Trigger Pair (No Real Rush - Would like a small male 4-5")
Achilles Tang
Achilles Tang Hybrid
Maybe Blonde Naso Maybe

Next up with be some dwarf angels (Potters, Flame), Wrasses (Flames, Leopard, Fairy, etc...), Blennies, etc... smaller active colorful fish. It's my wife's turn now after I bought the expensive black fish :P

Also will be moving in my Black Ice Clown with the Chevron. Not sure if I'm going to try to pair it up at some point, or add more clowns down the line.

Really need to get started on coral as well... we have two trips coming up, so I'll do that after we are going to be home for a while.

Good point about the algae! Didn't really factor that in, guess it'll take place of having three rocks of Nori and I wouldn't have to use as much nori.

PS: Would like a Sohal, but everyone seems to say no...

Why not consider getting an acclimation box to socially acclimate the smaller chevron?

Added the Chevron and the Black Ice Clown last night.

Not seeing any aggression, they actually seem a little more laid back.

The Black was chasing the Purple around the last few days. The Purple had a few nip marks on his tail. I think it's because of the Purple always having it's fins fully extending, the Yellow has it's tucked down.

Def use an acclimation box. Put your chevron in it first to get the others used to it. Pick out the worst offender as far as aggression and exchange the two of them when the time comes. That will learn 'em. Try your next tang additions all at once. You will need a BIG quarantine tank, but keep them separate at fist. Then give them access to each other a little bit at a time. Keep them together for an extended period of time. 2-4 months, and they will become best of friends. Danfeig has had great success with adding tangs two at a time. Even Sohal tangs in with clown tangs, powder blue, Achilies, exc. Look him up. He's got some genius ideas.
Daniel. :wavehand:

Will do Daniel :)

Not really seeing any aggression so far. Just the Black chasing the Purple. They went in together at the same time with a Yellow and Yellow Belled Blue.
