New tank at Strong Museum!

Don't be too worried about the stingray. When we first moved him into the 1200g tank, we re-stacked about 1/3 of the tank with minimal rock work so he had big wide open sand beds and open space to move around in. He hated it, never going to the open area. He has a favorite spot on the other side of the tank in a sandy cave area and seems to enjoy spending his time there. After about a month of him ignoring the other end of the tank we moved some rocks back over so it looked more natural.

He is very healthy and I would say happy. He takes food right from your hand and comes up to be rubbed and petted whenever you are working in the tank or feeding. I'm fairly confident with Tom's open/3-D aquascaping techniques that he'll have good space to move around in the big tanks. The guests LOVE him, and he is such a great conversation starter. Makes educating our guests about the animals that much easier.

BTW, I go away for one weekend and everyone starts posting in my threads... Whats with that??!! ;-)

Cheers,
Tad

The new tank is making me think of excuses to bring my niece to the museum.

I really do think that this tank will look amazing, I hope that is has more of an opportunity to grow in than the last one. I will be making a trip up there.

ever hear that saying if you don't have something nice to say don't say it!

by the way lots of people like taller aquariums including David Saxby and more importantly most the visitors that will be viewing it so his choice is not a poor one at all, will only need longer tongs and brighter light. he's not setting this aquarium up for your interests only.
I didn't say anything that wasn't nice, Brent. I always re-evaluate what I post before putting it up for posterity, but if anyone thinks I wasn't being nice I apologize.
It would be worse to remain silent here IMO.
I gave constructive criticism in easy to understand terms specifically for several reasons:

#1) Tad's not setting this aquarium up for my interests and I won't be taking care of it :)
(Have you ever dealt with a really deep acrylic aquarium that's brightly lit?)
#2) My (former) family membership to the Strong Museum helped fund the first aquariums installed there. I've always believed it's OK to make mistakes if you learn from them. It doesn't seem to be happening here. (Not Tad's fault.)
#3) I know what I'm talking about, Brent. Bold statement? David Saxby has called me on the phone on his coin. I don't believe David's aquarium has anything in common to the one we're discussing except lots and lots of Surgeonfish.

Tad- I'm sorry this thread got bumped up while you were away.
I hope that your skin is as thick as mine. It should comfort you to know that when it comes to reef aquaria I've made more mistakes than you have.
Give it all you can and nobody could ask for more. Like Cnidariaus already posted- we're only human.

nice... I'll be arranging for some field trips for my class to come there... some of my city kids think there are sharks in lake ontario! :O

Hi, Im a reef enthusiast in the Rochester area, and would love to help out with the Strong tank. just let me know how I can help!

Welcome! To our community Aaron! I feel honored you made your first post in my topic. I've had a few PMs and a few people telling me in person that they would like to help and I definately appreciate the kind gestures. I will be making a more formal post early next week (I'm at my girlfriend's house in Buffalo right now, so can't take too much time). But I would be honored to accept SPS or LPS frag donations you would like to see go into the new tank. Monetary donations are of course welcomed by the museum also and I would see they are put to good use.

To those that have offered to help with the actual tear down and physical labor of moving the tank, please know that I am very honored that you would take time out of your schedule to help us, but due to museum policy we cannot let anyone not part of our staff participate for liability reasons.

Again, I will try and post a more in depth update around Monday, and I thank everyone for their enthusiasm. 30 days from now they new tank will be delivered! (WOW!)
:eek2:

Cheers,
Tad

12 days and counting till the new tank arrives. Things are starting to get crazy! We will be breaking down the old tank in 4 days, so if anyone wants to see the old tank in all its glory one more time, better do it before Monday.

One of the guys on the tank change over team was vacationing over Christmas break in Florida and stopped by to check on the tank and take some pictures.

He still hasn't finished the life support systems and lighting but as you can see in the pictures they are coming along.

Check out how open the top of the tank will be! I'm very excited about this, the top of our current tank is probably 50% covered or more in acryllic, this is almost 100% open.

We have a light system which will sit on the tank and be lifted out of the way at the flick of a switch. This lift mechanism sits in the middle of the tank.

Well, here we go. In about 7 hours from now we'll be taking down the 1200g tank. No turning back now! I bought a time lapse setup for my D-SLR that I'll be taking in and hopefully get some neat time lapse shots of the tank coming down, but go guarantees. Wish us luck!

Had the opportunity to meet Puter the other day. What a great guy. Hope to be able to meet some more folks in the near future!

Cheers!
Tad

Saw one that had been installed over 2 years ago that was still going strong. Everything is stainless I think.

If you don't mind I'd like to get the details of who makes that lift, I'm planning a large tank as well, many thanks, my stainless sink, etc. in my tank room is rusting though probably not the quality of that lift
