40 gallon hex tank -- 2 mos old --- 20 lbs of live rock -- 3 corals doing well . added a maroon clown 3 wks ago . did well --- then added a coral beauty angelfish --- did well for about 5 days , then noticed popeye -- fish folks said possible mechanical damage , but advised using maracyn - two. Treated for 5 days. during that time , the coral beauty developed tail rot .and ick. A week later the clown got ick and also died. we have had water tested several times , and said to be excellent. what should we do about fish ???? how long is water" contagious" .?????
advice and comments welcome.

The problem with treatments is that it can depress the biological filtration that you want in the tank (good bacteria). Ich is usually a secondary illness and due to stress. I picked out a blue tang from my LFS that was around for 3 wks then added a yellow tang one week later. The blue tang developed ich, some sort of tail fungus (not sure). Blue tang got used to his more aggressive tank mate, ich and fungus subsided and I never treated the tank with anything.

If your concerned about chemicals in the water, get a polypad, they take out everything.

I wouldn't add any more fish to your system for at least 6 weeks. That way, the ick will not have host and it will eventually die off.

It's much easier on you system than pumping lots of chemicals in it to rid yourself of the ick.
