new tank frag donnation program

How about this idea ? something fun and and beneficial to all members and encourage sharing, trading of corals among club members.

When a member seting up a new tank, after it has cycled, and the water parameter tested ok. We should do one of those new tank frags donation program where all the club members bring frags to donate to the new tank, this way we can help keep the club growing and keeping members stocked with tank raised corals. Some of the rules have to apply opcourse. Vendors are also welcome to donate to the givers

1, the member have to give away frags to other new tank in the future
2, tank husbandtry have to be maintained to a high level to ensure a good survival rate of the frags, "regular water changed is a must".
3, frags can not be sold or traded until it has grow out.
4, the new member receiving the frags will have to agree to host one meeting to show off the new tank
5, posting update pictures of the corals after 6 motnhs

I think it is a great idea. I know that when i started my tank not to long ago, getting some frags from a few mebers helped alot and mostly the advice that came along with them on how to make my tank better was the help that i needed to take my tank to the next level. I would be more than happy to pass a few along.

I like this idea. It gives us a chance to spread our corals around. This gives you an opportunity to get a frag back if something where to happen to your coral. Whose setting up a tank!

I think it sounds like a good idea. I especially like the part about hosting a meeting! As a side note I think the water change requirement should be elaborated on since if they are done wrong can actually hurt a tank. By the way I have tanks running with no water changes at all for 5 plus years. I wouldn't recommend this for a newbie though!

Steve, Yeah the water change part need to be elaborated. MY tank does best when I do frequent water changes, so I always have new make up water ready. When I see my corals color up and grows so well, I cant wait for the next water change

In my experience, when I make up new water,

1, I use IO water exclusively ( too much nutrient in the water will produce high level of brown diatom and corals will brown out)

2, I match all the water parameter with the tank such as
Calcium, Alk, temp and PH as closely as I can.

3, I perform no more than 10% of water change each time (not to shock the system)

4, Frequency of water change for me is every 2 weeks

If you have anything you would like to add please do so, I am sure the newbies will love to learn from other people's experience

Opcourse the list above is just my experience, so I think as long as people have a good way of doing things they dont have to follow it. I left that list open for discusion because I know not everyone agree on the frequent qater change thing.

I do that as well I would just add that I put a heater and power head (pointed at the surface) in the mixing container and let sit for 24 hours this will raise the DO level and stabilize the PH as well. If you need to do a large water change for any reason I would definitely suggest adhering to all of the above.

Great info. I was going to say that I drop an airline in my makeup water the day before to raise DO and stabilize pH.

You know I always leave out the finer details for some reason yes I do have a mixing pump and a heater and I turn them on atleast 24 hours before the day I perform the water change to airate it and bring up the temp to match the tank in the winter time. Summer time is a whole different story

I just bought a 55 gallon tru vu with a stand, just have to build the canopy. I will be picking it up on Tuesday, and hopefully have it running sooooon after that. ill try too post some pics

Actually Chris, that tank became my fresh water resivoir, and i have a 75 gal that hopfully will have water in it this weekend. I already have the salt water made up in that 55 and a 30. Just finishing up the frame for the stand now.
