Hey guys Ive just ordered a new tank 84"L x 28"W x 29 7/8"H . roughly 300 gallons Euro Braced , 3 sided , with an internal overflow on one side . Its time to have them drill the holes in the overflow . ANy suggestions on size , Should I use Durso stand pipes? I will be housing mostly SPS . Return pump hasnt been bought yet so ... The stand hasent been built either .. thanks

1 1/2" to 2" holes tend to be the norm on the boards for big tanks. They are nice and big and stuff (like snails) will fall through them if they do make their way in there. You can check the drainage of these sizes, I don't know what they are offhand. I know 1" is around 600gph.

So I'd look at going 1 1/2 bulkheads (make sure you get the holes the correct size to fit the bulkhead). I'd say 2 x 1 1/2" holes would be enough, but that depends on how much turnover you want. If you want more than that, bump up to 2" bulkheads or 3 holes. Good luck!

Yaga,

You need holes cut that are the size of the bulkhead fitting, not what the bulkhead is called. For example, a 1.5 inch bulkhead requires a hole bigger than 1.5 inches.

Personally, I would recommend getting bulkheads from Savko.com. Go there, figure what bulkhead you need for flow, chceck the BH fits inside your overflow and then get the external dimensions for the threaded part. Their site has all the details.
I would recommend the Schedule 80, they are an excellent product and in my experience have never leaked.

Thanks pwhitby,
Thats what I tried to explain, but did fairly poorly. Anytime I said "hole" I ment bulkhead. So Just remember the whole needs to be bigger than the bulkhead "size".

Aquarium Obssesed There drilling the holes . They should drill the right size for what ever size bulkhead I pick . Im leaning towards 2 - 1.5" . How about return lines? Should I get them to drill any holes for the return ?

Don't know if you would ever need them, but if you have the room, have an extra hole or two drilled. you can cap them off, and if you ever need them, you have them.
