New Tank Setup

so i just aquired a 154 gallon tank, its 48"L 24"L 31"H. Im wondering size of overflow to use on it, im going to use a 55 gal tank as the sump. i already have a Mag 9 pump, I was wondering if it would be big enough for the return.

I was thinking about that option. I've never drilled a tank, so idk if I can or not? What would be a reason that I couldn't? And thank you! Really neat site.

Check to see if the glass is tempered or not. But I would drill it...If you never have done it before, theres plenty of mom/pop shops that can do it for you, even some local LFS.

Return is plenty. I would personally do dual overflows in both corners, but a large center one would suffice as well.

If you ,know the manufacture and Date it was made . Check on there website for rather the tank is tempered or not.. Also some put stickers on the bottom of the tank under the brace.. You can see these by looking down into the tank.

Tempered bottom - do not drill-- Your tank is tempered on bottom only.. Can drill a over flow on the back.. (MOST Likely for many newer tanks)

Tempered do not drill IF YOU HAVE THIS Your tank may be tempered on all sides

Welcome to RC..Most of the post I have seen here about drilling tanks say that folks are surprised at how easy it is to do. Just read some of their posts and do a few practice runs on an old piece of glass. You will have so much more flexibility by going that way. There is a calculator around that can compute the overflow size needed for the size tank you have.

thanks everyone for the info so far! Is helpful. Is the internal overflow box any louder than the external hang on one?

No. If anything, you can make an internal overflow quieter if you set up a beananimal overflow.
The loudest part of my setup is the skimmer.
