New tank!

breutus

Don't ask me, I'm wrong.
Everything is going really good with the new tank!!! I wanted to get some pictures up and possibly ask a few questions.

Its a 72 gal bow front (Thank you Justin), with a 30 gal sump. It is using a mag 9.5 for the return and one MJ 1200 modded for extra flow. The sump has a 5 and a half inch deep sand bed and cheato. As well as a homemade carbon reactor and very soon to be homemade calcium reactor and a corallife skimmer.

The tank only has about three inches of sand maybe a little more in places. And for the moment only has about 40 pounds of live rock and twenty pounds of base rock.

The tank has been set up for about two and a half weeks three weeks. It was filled with about half the water from my old tank and almost the rest was ocean water. All the sand was live sand. there have been three reef chromis in there since day five and doing well, I put a small kenya tree and small bit of pulsing xeina in there just two days ago.

A couple of questions, how long does it take for the deepsand bed to start taking effect. Do I need to wait till then to finish moving the rest of stuff over, how long in general? Where should I put my mj 1200 in the corner on the side? And last and possibly most important, The rest of my rock is fairly large and one in particular has two anemones on it as well as star ployps, and frogspawn. I have always moved coral under the water never putting them in the air at all. I am not going to be able to do this with these. So is it okay to just pull the whole rock out of water will the anemones be okay???

thanks to everyone that has helped me with this project i am on the home stretch WOOHOO!!!

back when there was a forum that was at least partially dedicated to deep sand beds, i asked a similar question there. the answer was that DSB dont do anything unless in a tank 55g or better.

as far as taking stuff out of the water.....i do it all the time to glue them to somethign, or rearrange rock etc. in nature during low tide corals are out of the water for hours at a time, and thats in the tropical sun.

Here are my opinions:

I would add the skimmer prior to adding the rest of your stuff. Test water parameters. If they are all good, move the rest of the stuff over. I'd have carbon in there too when you do the move.

You can move your corals (there are a few things like elegance corals some sponges and clams that I think you should avoid taking out of the water) and anemones out of the water as long as you don't have to go far. It's always best to acclimate fish and inverts to new water. So if you can get the anemones off the rock this would allow you to do a drip acclimation. Otherwise, just go for it. For the peices that will fit in a salt bucket, move them in the bucket in water for as much of the move as possible. Move the rock fast with the anemones on the top of the rock as you move so they are supported and are not hanging off the rock. Be prepared for the anemones to move from their current position on the rock in the new tank.

Decide where to put the powerhead once everything is moved. You will be able to see where it needs to go after that. You will see if you need to add other ones as well.

You said the sand is live so I'm not sure what you are asking about the sand.

Ah hell Lucas. You let her on the board

Looks good. Let me know if you need help with anything. Are you running a Phosban Reactor?

How did you end up doing the MH?

Yup.

Well let me know when your fam can kick it. I know I have my son's b-day Sat. and you have one on Sun.

I don't see why you can't just party on a weeknight and deal with the pain the next morning. :D

I found by training every weeknight makes it easier

I'm still not running a phosban reactor... and to be honest i don't know what one does LOL. and i totally have not done the MH yet i am not a hundred percent sure how i'm doing it yet though i have a general idea, well see how it goes.

lisa the skimers on it and has been since day one. and the waters are testing great on everything. so i think i am switching soon just scared lol

well figure it out on the family justin we all want to come out really badly it has just been a busy week with everything. well figure it out. and hey as far as my wife goes hey i would rather her be interested in my hobby then telling me no i can't buy that lol

Don't be scared. If you have the ability to re-acclimate the anemones by getting them off the rock, give it a whirl. However, there might be even more stress on them if you are having to get them off the rock. I'd personally just make sure the temp is very close and take the rock out with the anemone.

well I finally added everything last week. And just after I did my sump started to leak! On the day of my daughters birthday party no less! bad day thats all I can say lol. but I got that all fixed up and I thought I would post some pictures of it to show how everything's doing.

Looks good. Have your anemones split yet? They sometimes do after a move to a new tank. Mine went from one to about 6 in 6 months time it moved to a new tank.

No none of them have split yet. And part of me really wishes the big one would so I could do some trading, but the other part... well I like him that big lol, he's gotta be a foot wide during the day.

Thanks everyone it's been exciting to get the new tank set up and could not of done most of it with out everyones help!
