New to all of this

I dont know how much flow I have honestly. I couldn't give an estimate either. The only flow is from the HOB filter.

its really not going to do much besides move the surface...however....

Do you have a biowheel in your filter? if so- you are potentially making a very large mistake. Its a very common mistake made by lots of new people in the hobby.

If not, then good.

Let me know what you have in your set up and ill walk you through what yoiu need to do. If you would like to come visit and see my setup- just PM me and we can set up a time.

Regards,

Paul.

Take Paul up on this offer, you will learn a lot potentially saving you a bunch of money. And his tank is incredible!

At Paul, there is no bio wheel but there is this mesh looking type stuff. Dont have carbon in it either. I am thinking with going for at least 1000gph(do I need more)? Fish I want are
Couple of chromis
Reef angel
Goby
Pair of clowns
Mayne something else Idk
I would like some corals like mushrooms zoas and maybe a kenya tree, probably nothing more than that.

So wet and got my water tested, and they said my tank already cycled, and it hasnt been a full two weeks of being set up, but then again I began partially about a month ago with a lil bit of LR. So being a little weary, I bought 8 snails-mixture of the different ones

careful with the angels. Even so called "reef safe" angels can potentially become coral eaters and once they do, you will never be able to stop them and then you have to either stop keeping the particular coral they have developed a taste for (in my case trumpets and some zoas) or get rid of the angel ( an Eblii Angel in my case) And they are hard to catch, trust me, I know. I know flame angels are very popular reef Angels but they will eat coral too. It is hit or miss.

I have a Kenya tree frag with your name on it just let me know when you want to come get it. I hope free is an acceptable price.

At ghellin- free is the best price (; ha. Let me get next week's schedule figured out, and I will PM you. And thanj you soooooo much in advance!

I really like Potters Angels, so far I havent had one that had a liking for corals. Coral beauties are generally safe- but flames and bicolors I would not go near.

A few years ago I had a flame that happily ate all of my acans. Suffice to say, I wasn't particularly happy.

I just noticed a couple of brown-ish spots near the back of my tank. I'm adsuming its some sort of algae. I added about eight snails on friday (after they told me my tank had already cycled.) Is this normal? I have had my tank up and running for about 17 days. Not including the days where my tank was only partially set up.

O yeah you will have algea grow unless you have ultra low nutrient tank- which is hard at first - I would just scrap it off with a clean paper towel- I use a paper towel bc some of the algea will stick the the towel and u can remove it from the glass with less of it getting into your water coloumn - u should check out Reef cleaners dot com and look on more inverts - you should read as much as you can and check out some other tanks bc the learning curve is small if you get good info - this hobby is a sink hole - start with a 10g soft then end up with a 220 g sps tank/ which is what's awesome about it

my computeris being fixed so doing everything on my phone, and compared it to some pictures and it looks like diatom algae stuff. its not really large, but some of the snails are right in the middle of it, so I hope that they are eating it lol

Also went and got my water checked again
Salinity-1.020
PH-8.2
ACK-10
N02-0
NA3-0
NO3-0
Did a 5 gallon water change and saw a line of salt where the water level used to be when I first set up. I did the water change and topped off with ro water and scraped the salt back in. I also happen to have a 20 gallon and 30 tank both empty, and I was thinking of maybe converting it to a sump, but idk.if I need a special tank for a sump (still kind of lost on how it works) but I'm afraid of not being able to add one because of the stand structure and lack of space. Both tanks are 1' in width and I only have a foot in length of space underneath the stand. Thoughts?

You do not need a sump. My first 4 tanks were ran without a sump. If you do decide you have to have a sump, you can add one later. Your stand sounds tight, but you could try placing a potential sump tank under the stand before you move ahead. I had a 4ft 55gal and I managed to cram a sump in there, but I did not like that situation at all. There was practically no room to maneuver in there. Of course some people use a bucket for a sump, but that understandably leads to bubbles in the display as you can't easily compartmentalize a bucket. And you would hardly have room to hide all of your equipment. You also mentioned you may be moving within a year. Remember, you can always add one later.

Keep asking questions! :)

As for salinity and other paramenters...here's an an excellent link regarding parameter information compiled into one helpful article by Randy Holmes-Farley.

Zack I am new to all this and it is a long and slow process to get everything started. Madkat has helped me out a lot. And LR will be your biggest buy, also if you can go with LED lights. They will last forever. They are pricey. Hang in there and get your water tested often. See ya at the meeting.

yeah I got really really excited when I had wet pets and then today aquariums of Edmond tell me my water was good. I wanted to buy a fish right then, but I am still waiting until I get powerheads. Looking at maxijet 1200, thinking about two and putting them on opposite sides of the tank. (any other brands that are reliable?) want to get around 1800-2200gph according to some calculator thing I found online. Also waiting until I get corals until I get better lighting (my bday is in February if anyone feels an uncontrollable desire to buy or build me some LEDs ;-))

I have had my tank up and running for about a month and I started with my clean up crew then i bought 2 clown fish Saturday. And I am trying a couple of frags.
