New To Tanking

Hello guys, I'm Jeremy, a portrait photographer from Boise, Idaho. I've been recently thrust into the land of aquariums. My wife is a big fish nerd due to sharing it her whole life with her father.

Well recently we inherited a 180 gallon fish tank from her father before he passed, and it was her big dream to get the thing put on display. Before that it sat unwrapped for 20 years. So we finally got it up this 4th of July weekend.

I know you guys only do Saltwater here, but it was a Freshwater tank. We have tons of gear for Saltwater, but for an initial setup, we wanted to at least get it up with some fish.

As a newcomer, I thought I would share what we were able to do!

Here is the initial setup. We really didn't have the money or ability to make a fancy wooden stand, so we had to go the cinder block route.

We spent 24 hours running two strong canister filters pushing nearly 1000gph through the tank before we introduced the fish.

This is what we managed to complete the tanks look (No fish in yet, just final touches)

Finally we were able to put our fish in. We don't have a huge selection yet, but we're working on it, we have:

3 Bala Sharks
1 Redtail Shark
3 Tiger Barbs
2 Tin Foil Barbs
2 Siamese Algae Eaters
1 Bristlenose Pleco

So that's our start to our big tank. I apologize if talking freshwater is against the rules, but I thought this would be a great forum to be a part of despite. So hello from Boise!

I like it. It looks clean with that skirt around it. Hope it all works out. I have had a freshie tank since i was 12. Nothing that big though. I have a 55 gallon i have converted to saltwater and currently have a 40 gallon freshie. Have fun with it.

Nice.

The first link was invalid and the second was the whole page. You need to copy just the picture so the addy ends with jpg. before you insert it between the img tags.

Hello Jeremy!

I'm also from Boise, welcome to the site. I have a 29 gallon nano reef and an 55 gallon African cichlid tank. If you want a freshwater tank with lots of color and activity, you might think about African (Malawi) cichlids. The 180 gallon tank would be an amazing cichlid tank, and Boise tap water is ideal since it is very hard/alkaline.

There are a few good LFS here in town, I like Boise's Freshwater (for freshwater) and Aquatic Supply, Corals4Cheap (for saltwater).

Again welcome, and feel free to PM me if you have any other Boise-specific quesitons!

Hello Barracuda, thank you for the welcome, we're excited about our tank and as soon as money allows, we're converting it to a saltwater tank. The skirt was actually just a shower curtain we found at Walmart for 15 bucks heh.

Sorry about the image links DC, will make sure to place them a bit more correctly in the future.

Fishhuman, you're right, we could, except the fish store has this strict "Pay us for fish" policy that we can't adhere to right now :)

Novadan! Awesome! A fellow Idahoan, thanks for the welcome. We are looking into the Malawi's, though my wife is the final decider, she likes the idea of lots of schooling fish to keep the tank flowing beautifully.

Also thanks for the suggestions, we have perused those different stores many times, my wife just loves raising fish, she truly has more passion about fish than I do with photography and I LOVE photography lol.

Oh, we also have all this dry rock if you're interested in adding to your tanks. We got 4 tubs plum full of dry rock, 50 gallon tubs at that :)

Really pretty tank, do a lot of reading around here and before you know it you will know how to do the whole salt water thing. With a tank that size you have so much water volume you could really do some crazy/fun things. Hope this is the beginning for you and welcome! As a photography lover saltwater produces some of the prettiest images under the lights.

Check these out as an example (not mine, from r/reeftank)
