hi,i start posting and talking to few people without first saying HI to all...im new to the site and new to the saltwater tank world lol...i have a freshwater tank for years and i think now its time for the next big step...im sure i will get alot of help here in the forum and hopefully i get to see some of u guys tanks n setup just to give me an idea of what i want and how...im thinking on getting a 55g - 75g reef tank, people keep saying to get glass so i guess it will be glass..im still learning few names that are part of the tanks like filters,skimmer,powerheads,sump..etc.etc...i wanna know some stuff before i go to the aquarium asking for stuff and trying to describe people at the store what i need lol :)

Hello and welcome......don't be shy about asking questions, it will be less painful in the longrun. There are a lot of people here with many years of collective experience, and undoubtly varied opinions. All I can say is research, research and more research before you buy equipment, or livestock......something as simple as getting a tank could affect you down the road, as in not getting one with an overflow for example could make things more challenging for your ultimate goal..........take a deep breath, calmly pull out your wallet, this won't hurt........much that is. Youll either love it or hate it and in six months you can tell us the answer!!! But the best thing I can tell you is learn PATIENCE, because nothing happens quickly in this hobby only bad things........

Did I get all the cliches?

Want some help now? Go through the site and find "the" tank you want to ultimatly end up with, so in a couple of weeks when your asking about lights and if you need a Mag 1800000 pump for your return we all know what you want to have in the end and are all on the same page. Post those here and maybe we can all plan how to spend your money on this thread, so in the next few weeks you can have a shopping list to find used stuff as it comes up or where the new stuff is to be found.

Not trying to be overwhelming in anyway, just trying to get you to that tank you want ASAP.

Again, welcome............I am the resident windbag member....Doug.

Just got the coolest idea, a flow chart for selecting a tank and equipment for new folks based on the type of tank they want. sort of a fishtank by numbers.........:eek1:

Welcome! If you haven't already, you should come to the monthly club meetings. It is great fun, great speakers on a variety of saltwater topics, and a wealth of knowledge amongst the club members. We meet the third Friday of every month.

I too am interested in starting up a 55-75 reef after the holidays are over and my wallet has a chance to recover!! I will be paying close attention to other people's suggestions.

Once again, welcome and enjoy the hobby, it's addicting!!

We meet at Roundtable on Madison in Folsom? or is it Orangevale? Anyways you can go to www.marineaquarist.org and get all the details about the club and it has the address for the meeting place.

Maybe we'll see you at the meetings?

Anyone can go to the meetings free of charge. If you decide to become a member, your membership fee more than pays for itself with all the discounts offered by area LFS.

Welcome to reefkeeping! If you are new at it (I am just getting back into it myself, a lot has changed the last ten years!), I would say "read read and read some more!". A couple of book series I would recommend you buy and read are the Reef Aquarium vols 1,2, and 3 (Sprung and Delbeek) and Modern Reef Aquarium vols 1 and 2 (Svien and Fossa). Svien and Fossa's book is mostly "european" but gives a lot of good info. The first volume of both series is several years old but still contain a lot of valuable information. There are other good books out there too that others on this forum will probably recommend.

When it comes time to buy equipment, I have learned the hard way to buy quality the first time. You will end spending more money in the long run if you buy 2-3 cheap lighting systems etc than if you bought one real good quality one the first time.

Anyway just my less than two cents' worth! Best of luck!

yea i been reading lots of good info here in the forum and some others in different sites online...yea ill try to save up some $$ to get some good equiment for the tank,i dont want to stop working while im still newbie and them i wont know what to do lol..
