I think you should . "slow down"
First get the tank up with water in it Salinity level right. If your Rock is Live rock cured or uncured (not dry) let it cycle. 4-8 weeks depending with lights out. Then Look to see where its out and Post some pics to get a better handle on where to go from there.
This whole i gotta have a HUGE Cleaner crew is a myth started by the places selling them. What happens is they all eat and clean the tank they die off from starvation. Kind alike the bacteria in cycling your tank. They will only grow to support the waste you have. No reason in having 40 plus snails and crabs and have to feed them adding waste to your water Column.
So I say cycle the tank fishless .
if you really want Chromis they are a good fish to start with .Get them small and all the same size. get say 5 of them. Wait a month until your tank goes thou some more changes. you will see some algae come and go and can adjust things and get a handle on understanding your tank. You can get a few hermits and few snails at a time. But keep a eye on them and that they are eating without you have to add extra food just for them..
Sorry for long post but i think slow and STEADY Is the key. NOT BUY BUY BUY.

You need a cuc in any marine aquarium, most to clean algae even if you don't have any fish you need them.

Fish only systems usually don't have to clean up crews because the inhabitants usually eat them. And like everyone else has said Nassarius snails are carnivores and don't really do much for your sand bed except to come out when you overfeed.
not to mention I have an extremely hard time keeping any sort of cleanup crew in my mantis tank....lol

Ya think? LOL

It all depends on what fish you have. Have you ever wondered why the nassarius snails are in the sand bed to begin with? I hardly ever even when I feed see my two large Congo nassarius snails. The small ones are out a lot most of the time but especially when I feed. They are in my sand stirring it up and I am pretty sure eating uneaten food. Maybe they do eat a bunch of the crap in the sand maybe they don't. But they do get it up to where it gets whisked away into my sump. I'm a fan far more of them than blue legged hermits those murderous bastards :hammer: I only have two of them in my DT the rest are in the sump. Redlegs however are much nicer and have a place in my tank. I've got other snail, not as many as I use to because of the blue legged hermits :hammer: bastards :D :blown:

We all have our opinions and I will keep my nassarius snails and share what I do with others. No two tanks are the same and it's all of our hobby. RC is sharing this information.

No hating on smurf legged crabs. They have feelings to. I have a few blue legs and red legs. maybe 10 snails in my display Not sure how many in my Fuge . There is NO Sand in my display but my fuge is 16x48 inches . no telling what all is in there. I know Guppies breed in there and there babies end up as fish food ... Yum yum Says the Chromis.

when I started reefing about seven years ago I bought two Nassarius snails, now I have about 15.
I wasn't surprised at all when I saw them laying eggs, but was totally unexpected that they would live and grow up!

Yeah they do, and those feelings brought them south to the sump

That's pretty cool. They are my favorite snail. Love watching them flip back over when they land on their backs. LOL
