New to the hobby

Hey all,

I'm a student down here at VA Tech and will be setting up a tank hopefully in august. I was just wondering where a good supply/livestock store is. I'm sure Roanoke must have at least 1. I don't mind the drive there but the closer to Blacksburg the better.

The best place around here would have to be UA in Troutville (approx a 50 min drive from Tech which is why I do not frequent it unless im in the area already).... Other places in the area include Zooquatic (ZQ) and C&P Pets (CP). ZQ is in the process of moving back to Bburg, so they are closed and CP is in Cburg. Everyone on this forum will have a different opinion on each store, so maybe best to ask for preferences over PM.....

Anyways.... Welcome to the club - you'll find A LOT of helpful people here, and as always, once you get your tank set up and ready we all have lots of little goodies to get you started!

Welcome! UA is about the only thing in Roanoke worth going to to buy livestock. As for equipment, I would look online for most of it, the prices are way better, unless you're hopelessly impatient like me, then I guess UA is the way to go since they are a strictly saltwater store and keep a lot of stuff in stock that you won't find anywhere else. I live in Rocky Mount and the LFS doesn't do saltwater, but they do order stuff for me so you can always try doing that in Blacksburg. I've bought a bunch of stuff from ZQ over the years and I've always liked them too.

Welcome, this board is fantastic and all the people on it are willing to help with just about anything, cept paying your bills.

C&P is the closest thing around that is open right now as Silvermoon has said. they are over by arby's/el gran rodeo accross 460 from Best Buy.

They have a good selection of livestock but dont have the lights to get alot of corals -sps, lps etc though they do have some.

Hey guys thanks alot! I've been to ZQ and I didn't know they are moving hopefully it won't be too small cause their last place had some potential beside location. CP was a little small, and packed so I didn't look around much. I'll check out UA next I guess when I'm up there. Again thanks alot if you can think of another place please post!

I would just post what you are looking for on the board, you never know someone on RC might have what you want without paying retail. There is always group buys on the borad that we try and do at least once a month.
