New to the Nano reef

Purigen - Every 6 months, (It's also color coded, turns from white to yellow when it's time to replace). Don't use any medication with it in the tank, that is the one thing that will make it impossible to recharge.

Get a plastic container (a new one, those square ziplock disposable ones work (see the blue assesor pic on the previous page).

Dump half of the water from the LFS with the fish into the container (cover so it doesn't jump). Empty water until about half full. Take your tank water and fill up the container. Wait 5 minuites, empty half and replace with your tank water, repeat for 30 minutes.

Empty half back into the tank? Or in the sink? If its in the sink, wouldn't I have to replace the water I took out of the tank?

See nobody would ever know there were 6 fish in my tank.... :)

Another method, which doesn't require dumping water as you add it is this...

Start with half the bag of water and fish as colin described...then, just add small amounts of your tank water, about the amount you would get in a full turkey baster, once time every 5 minutes...you have enough water when you have doubled the original amount of water...use a net to scoop out the fish and plop in to your tank...then, you only dump the water one time...and the fish isn't in the container...

This also works if you float the bag and add the water while it is in the tank still floating...water out of tank via a turkey baster and in to the bag...displaced water is the same...then, when you have doubled the amount you get the fish out and dispose of your bag...this keeps the water the exact same temp as your tank, whereas keeping the water in a tupperware container could allow it to cool a few degrees and shock the fish as you plop him in...minor shock, but still a shock...

Just Don't let your wife catch you using her turkey baster! Mine got pretty upset but not half as mad as the time she caught me using "her" toothbrush to clean algae..................just kidding!

Update on tank!
There is a big diatom bloom on the sand , looks brown! The large rock is covered with a fuzzy algae which my one snail is cleaning nicely once cleaned it seems to stay clean for now!Clown and buttons look great. Fingers are crossed!

It just grows back so fast. it is a pain to get the corners and it's so packed right now it's hard to get close to the sandbed, I did the front glass with a razorblade about a week ago and you can see the specks come back...

A friend is stopping by Thursday night and is bringing some eggcrate. I am planning 2 things.

First I want to make a multilevel platform for my media in the middle chamber so I can have my purigen, chemi-pure & phosban all stacked up nice and neat. If I have the room I'll put it all in chamber 1 with the filter floss on top. it sounds confusing, pictures by the weekend to help explain.... :)

And I want to make an eggcrate shelf coming off the back wall towards the top of the light for my misc. zoa frags. I have like 15 little zoa frags I'd like to move out of my way and let them grow out (more light = more growth). Again pics when it's installed, sounds confusing... :)

And I still need to install my new hood (108W from nanotuners). Hopefully Saturday....

To many projects.... :)

kingfisher, you bring up 2 good points here...I don't know if we have talked about either one so I'll do it now... ;) First off, make sure you go buy yourself some "tank only" tools...this includes things such as a few tupperware containers (or some generic similar product), a turkey baster, a few brushes ranging from a toothbrush up to a small hand-held dish cleaning brush (soft bristles of course, can be mildly rigid), etc...make sure you either keep this stuff in a container in your stand or with the rest of your aquarium equipment or make sure you label each piece with permanent marker "AQUARIUM USE ONLY"...you can put some really nasty stuff in to your tank accidentally by using the same turkey baster your wife just cooked dinner with!! :eek1:

Second, don't make your significant other mad!! Get them involved so they catch the bug and then they will start asking questions like "When are you gonna go back to that LFS and buy that cool looking green coral we saw the other day!" :D

You guys hit the nail on the head. My woman got me the tank for x-mas and now she is ready to leave me. hahahahahaaa. I spend so much time doing things with the tank, I think she is regretting the gift.

But seriously, you guys are also right on the tank-only tools. I started doing this about a week ago (turkey baster, tupperware, toothbrush, and a super wide mouth gallon container for water changes). This actually pleased the woman, giving her piece of mind that she won't be using a cup with a ring of saltwater around the rim.

Also, did we ever figure out what size lock line (modular hose to direct flow into tank) w need to fit nano? I know greg, you got yours on ebay, but Colin and I ordered ours from the company. We got 3/4" and Colin said thats not the right size.

Just wondering 'cause I want to send the package back to the company and get the right size.

Guys,

I did my tests today and for the first time, my nitrate was around 4-5. Is this because I added the cleaning crew and, as they have been feasting, they have been going to the bathroom? And, aside of water changes, is there any way to bring the nitrate down?

Everything else was perfect, but 5 seems a little high for nitrate.

I didnt use the lockline hose. Just connected the Y to the outlet that is already there.

With the size of the tank not sure if the lockline is really necessary. I guess it couldnt hurt..... With this pump i think I get plenty of flow... jus aim the jets where i need it.

As for the nitrate, not sure. id let it be and test again friday, i thought mine was high but it turned out i was reading the card wrong... my tests have been almost exactly th esame for the last week.
