New to the Nano reef

I haven't heard from the company but I think 1/4" is right. I already opened mine, I might try to repackage everything and return it as well.

Its the 1/2" loc-line. I found a company selling it on e-bay (same one as greg bought) and I asked them what size it was and they responded 1/2". So, I am sending mine back to loc-line and getting the 1/2".

Any thoughts on the Nitrate? 5 is pretty high, should I be panicking about the crew dying?

I wouldn't worry, high nitrates (and 5 isn't really high) won't harm your crew, it's ammonia that would wipe them out.

Once your tank matures and you get into the waterchange rythym (not to mention adding chemi-pure) they will go down.

I'd just hold off on the fish until you get it a bit lower.
 
Glad 5 isn't too high. Nitrates been at 2 or whatever then next lower level on the test card is every time I tested it, except for today. And I did 2 25-30% water changes yesterday and the day before. I am going to do water changes of 25-30% every sunday. Figure that will be a good schedule.

And the chemi-clean people are sending me free chemi-pure. I called and explained what happened and they said they would send me some free stuff.

Not too bad.

It was a new baster and I was kidding about the tooth brush!

Oh yeah , my wife is hooked and loves the tanks!

If you still have the loc-line hold onto it. I found a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter on their site. I just ordered it and they are in Chicago so I should have it on Friday, I'll see if that works.... :)
 
Wow, this is like the end all be all thread to a lot of questions a newbie Reefer, like myself, could have.

I too, have a JBJ 24 gal. Nano (w/25lbs of LR and 2-3" of "live" sand). I need to get me a cleaning crew, right now I have 2 clowns (I think one is the typical percula clown and the other is what the LFS called a black oscellaris, they are both beautiful), I also have a bunch of random critters, what I think are a couple small feather dusters, and of course some algae.

Anyway, not trying to hi-jack, just wanted to introduce myself. Stay tuned for a tank profile and pics...

Oh yeah, and thanks for all the awesome info. you experienced reefers supply.

Jeez,

You can just tell how much of a newbie I am. First I didn't know what LFS was, then "pinned", AND, last night the woman and I stared at the cleaning crew for an hour and a half, fascinated. I probably won't leave the couch once I get a few fishes, corals and nano-stars.
 
UGH!!!!

I came home from my LFS to find one of my hermit crabs FEASTING on a Trochus snail. There were little chunks of meat all over the tank.

While at the LFS, I picked up 2 true percs and a little rock with about 4-5 pulsing xenias on it.

How do you guys have your flare nozzle pointed (where the water comes back into the tank)? It seems like the clowns are just swimming into the current, but not really going anywhere. They are not exploring the tank, just kind of staying in the same place.

Also, should I give them a bit of food tonight or wait until tomorrow?

Kill the day lights for the night and let them chill out. Try feeding them tomorrow.

The firefish I just got did the same thing (stayed in 1 part of the tank for a while).

I had my xenia on the sandbed right under the nozzle, they seemed to like lower flow (until they grew so tall they fell over one night and died).
 
The bigger one (female I think) is now swimming around a bit more, but the smaller looks like he is swimming but not going anywhere. Ya think he is a bit stressed?

I killed the big lights and put on the moonlights. And I will start feeding him tomorrow.

Also, on the fish forums I have been seeing some threads about "ich". What is it and what are the symptoms?

ich is a parasite (I think) that shows as white dots on the fish.

Clowns are pretty hardy, rare to see it on them (almost impossible if they are tank raised).
There are other fish that are more prone to ich, Achilles Tangs (which you won't keep :) ) is one. I know someone who has to run a UV filter to keep ich off his Achilles.

If a fish gets it it needs to go into a Quarantine Tank and be treated with medications.
 
Oh yeah, when I got the Blue Assesor he went into the tank after acclimation. He went straight behind a rock on the side, layed on his side and I could actually see he was breathing heavy. I thought he was a goner but my friend told me to shut off the lights for the day, I did and the next day he was perfect.

A good little trick to know whenever you add a new fish :)
 
my perc still stays to the back and swims kind of awkwardly... i think his tail is a bit crooked not sure if that has anything to do with it... Im going to wait a few more weeks before introducing any more fish to see how he does. he still eats very well though
