Moving them down was a good idea, they are probably just getting used to their new home. Any new coral should start on the sandbed and work it's way up even if it's one that is coming from MH to PC's.

Try to put it in a high flow spot as well, that will help make them open. I've heard people with GSP that stayed closed for several days before reopening.

Hope they come back quick for you, that's a nice sized colony.
 
Yeah, looks like there is a fungus among us :)

I'd take out the rock and hit that area with a razor blade to see if you can cut it off. GSP grows by the purple mat underneath it. Does it look like it's on top of the mat? If so just scrape it off (Inside a bucket, you don't need that going back in the tank).

I don't think that is why they are not opening but it may be a problem down the road if it continues to grow.

Unless you are prepared to do bi weekly water changes that are equal to 50% water changes and have space for the gflower pot, trade it. I have kept mine alive for more than a year and it has been receding, still showing some life. I love that coral! But is very, very demanding, space, flow, water conditions etc.

With the fungus on the GSP take it out of the tank and brush it lightly with a toothbrush and give it a freshwater rinse in a bucket. It will be fine. GSP will close for days at a time and regenerate. It is like a new birth, baby GSP, then BAM all over. One of my favorites I love watching is sway in the water movement.

Will bi-weekly water changes (I am assuming two 25% water changes) allow me to even attempt to keep the flower pot? My parameters are right on point. I check them daily (a bit anal, I am), and I just had to have the LFS check them and they said they were perfect.

What does the flower pot eat, specifically?

This may sound silly, but I really, really like the thing. And, if getting rid of it means it will have a chance of surviving, then I will. But if there is any way to keep it, I'd like to try. Also, smketyr, what size tank do you have?
 
slukach...I admire you ambition and determination...but, one lesson we all end up learning the hard way is when to just give in (not give up, that means tearing down our tanks ;) )...in a nano, water conditions can change in an instant when something goes south...you wouldn't want this beautiful coral dying on you one day while you are in court because something went wrong with the tank and you weren't there to catch it would you? I still stand by my original suggestion to find someone in your local club and trade it away for some nice beginner or intermediate corals...believe me, there are some VERY beautiful beginner and intermediate corals out there to chose from...

Now, I'm not trying to bully you in to this...if you truely want to keep this wonderous animal in your tank then by all means give it a shot...maybe yours will be one of those tanks that by some grace of god runs almost mechanically without problems...maybe yours will be one of those few tanks that actually gets to look like it was graced by the hands of god...if you decide to keep this animal, please by all means stay anal about your water!! :D And, do not hesitate to ask anyone if you have questions of any sort...and of course...SHOW US SOME PICTURES!!!!! :lmao: :lol: :D

I know you are right about this. It just bums me out that IO will have to get rid of it. It is such a cool coral. When I got it home, all the stocks were pulled into the rock. after about an hour in the tank, they were all extended a good inch and a half. There must be 30-50 stalks. Its gorgeous.

But, I would rather have it go to a good home than have it croak off in my tank.

I did snap a few pics last night after realizing I won't be able to keep it. I will get them up ASAP.
 
Smketyr is my buddy who kept the flower pot and I asked him to add some info about the GSP since he has some nice sized colonies of it in his setups.

So I got a raise at work this week so I decided it's time for some new additions :)
Ordered through that Sea Life website that had the nano starfish but didn't get any of those, went with some ricordia mushrooms and 2 Gorgonia. I've never been able to keep Gorgs alive, I don't think there is enough light in the stock DX hood since they are mostly photosynthetic.

I also found an ingenious way to keep my little zoa frags off the sandbed, pictures to come later this weekend when I get it going........
 
I have a 10 gallon (holds 8 gallons) Aga with 70w MH, I run a plenum and HOB filter with phosphate reducer and purigen (thanks colin!) I do a minimum of 2 changes weekly, often 4 times. I too am anal, I have some SPS in there as well. I also, have 40 gallon frag system.

I got the flower pot when I had a 55 then a 120. I had to downsize. With the larger tanks I did not have to watch the coral as closely. Just give it the space where it was happy. Too much extension on the flower pot means it is starving for light. Any little thing can start the coral into recession. Since it has been in nano I have had some difficult times with it. I recently started raditation treatment and do not have the energy to give complete care to my tank and its inhabitants. The flower pot suffered first. I have lost about 1/2 the polyps. I did move it to the frag system and it is happy again.

Also, if you do any fragging or removal of macro algea remove the flower pot coral.

I feed it with the tank, a mix of flake, frozen mysis, frozen ocean plankton, oyster eggs mixed with selco. I do start the feeding at the flower pot and move to other coral.

Would I keep it in a nano again? Definitely not. If I go with a larger system with larger filtration it would be the first and second coral in the system.

Another problem you may be having with the GSP is that your tank is still very, very new. Don't give up on them, keep detrius off of it so you don't get any build up. As long as you have that purple mat you will have star polyps. Even if it looks dead give it some time. I have a purple star that goes through a life cycle every 3-4 months.

the only cube i have seen that comes with a protein skimmer intergrated it is the red sea max which i had just seen at pet solutions, a little pricey though!
 
good new about my green star polyps ! They have started openning ,in the last hour about 20 percent!
Thanks for the reassurance. I was starting to freak! It wasn't so much the money but the fact that it was such a nice specimen!

slukach, hows the flowerpot, have you decided what you are going to do!
 
Flower pot is doing good. I bought some specialized food for him today (not that I plan on hanging on to him long term, but while I have him I want to make sure he is fed properly).

The people at the other LFS told me not to worry, kind of sarcastically. They said, "don't worry, expert aquarists can't even really keep them", which made me feel reeeaaaalllllllllyyyyy special. Ugh!!!

I have a bunch of posts up in a few different forums on here and reefmonkey. So, I am waiting to hear something.
