New to the Nano reef

Steve,

Do you have any aged saltwater? Or can you get a few gallons of it, say from a water change. That will help reduce a cycle. Maybe get a cup of live sand and add to the new stuff as well. Man that is my worst nightmare. I had a 120g set up and got a water leak from a missing o-ring on the skimmer and it had a slow leak that got under the floor. By the time I noticed it, sold off most of the tank, and disassembled it I had $3500 worth of water damage and that was doing the work myself, insurance paid $0. Steve: DO NOT THROW IN THE TOWEL! I can tell your hooked! S*** happens! I was going to do the same thing, I was not able to sell everything and after all was said and done even the Mrs. missed the tank.

Gregg, I am using aquamend same as Colin, $2.48 at the Home Depot tax included. That pic was when I first set up the 10g nano after the 120 fiasco. With the xenia mount it on some LR rubble and try it in a few different places, I have stalks that love the flow and stalks that do better in low flow, same with lighting. Let your coral tell you where it wants to be. Xenia is still one of my favorite corals becuase of the movement.

Colin, can I swing by tommorrow about 6:30 or 7:00? I get home at 5:30, let me eat, change and bag the frag and be on my way. If not how is Friday same time?

Tom

That amount of rock shouldn't have cracked the glass. I havent heard of the cubes cracking on the bottom. The rock was on the sand not directly on the glass right? Was the cube on a good solid level surface? It was sitting/being supported on the bottom trim not on the bottom glass right? You will need to test for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite just like you did during the initial cycle. If your water test ok and you put everything back in the tank Fri I would still test daily over the weekend. It might be a good idea to have some Prime or Amquel+ on hand too. A cheap 10gal from WalMart is worth having for situations like this and you can use it as a QT also. You dont have to keep it up and running all the time.

I really don't have any "aged" saltwater. I assume the stuff I get from the LFS is recently mixed. And I usually toss all "used" water I have after a change. I will use a cup of the sand I have to add to the new stuff. Hopefully, it will all work out.

And I couldn't see myself throwing in the towel, but it is disheartening to start from the beginning. Time AND money. But more the time invested is what I would be disgusted about. From where I am now, I wouldn't be starting from the beginning, but it still sucks.

I will be sure to keep you guys updated. AND get the pics up ASAP, so you can view, in full megapixel, my misery....

Still breaks my heart! Not a bad idea about the 10 gallon quarrentine tank or even a 5 gallon. If there is a reef club by you post that you are looking for one, could get one for a couple of bucks.

Rock was on sand and it was being supported on the stand properly. As stated before in prior posts, I am super anal about my parameters, so I test quite often anyway. Only time will tell.

I am working on pics now.

The reason I asked about the way the tank sat on the stand is in an earlier post there was some question about the size of your stand. If it is too small that might have put pressure on the bottom glass.

There is no such thing as too anal about water params in a nano. I test mine several times a week too. Better to use up test solution that miss the beginnings of a problem.

The stand is exactly the size of the "footprint" of the cube. I was mistaken about the stand size. So, I don't think that was the problem, but who knows at this point.

Ok, another attempt at pics (some of the tragedy and some of the livestock...even trying to throw in a pic of the family pooch:

If you paste the Photobucket IMG Code the one that starts with into your post the pictures show up instead of a link to them.
Sorry for the problems, hope you are back up soon.

Don't give up! We can rebuild it: Better, stronger, faster. The six million dollar nano. (Kidding, sorta).

Seriously, as aquarists, we've all had our setbacks and depressing wrecks. But consider how hypnotic the experience has been so far... Learn from it. 6 months from now you will be posting about your aquascaping awe. Envision it!

Once you have started down this path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

I was pointed to this thread by a veteran of this community and have found your journey very inspiring. Keep us informed about your process. Thanks!

Kevin,

The more I think about it the more I am coming to the realization that I have the saltwater virus. Quite an incurable but absolutely marvelous affliction. So, I think I can safely say that despite this setback (and I realize it could have been much worse), I will forage on.

Sperry,

Thanks for the tip on photobucket. I am still kind of getting the hang of it. I will try what you said.

Thanks for the support folks. The new cube arrived in Philly at 6:57am EST. I will be here soon and I will begin the rebuild.

Thanks again,

Steve

PS Everybody made it through the night seemingly OK (clowns, xenias...still pulsing away in the bucket, and flower pot.

Steve,

Wow...I totally feel for you man...I can't even imagine what would happen at my house with my nano...if this where to happen at my house it would be a total loss because my wife is too busy with our kids (6 total - 3 of which are between 1 and 4 :eek1: )...

As everyone said, you did everything almost spot on that you should have done!! The only thing I probably would have done different would have been to put some of the sand in the bottom of one of your buckets of water...this would have kept the bacteria alive...but, the water that is in your buckets will have some bacteria in it as well...but hey, some experience aquariasts would have not even done half of the stuff you did right... ;)

So, if you can when you are redoing the tank here is what I would do first...go to Wal-Mart, PetSmart, or anywhere you can get a cheap 10g or 20g tank...when you get it home, transfer your live rock and water from that bucket to the 20g tank (I would probably go with a 20g tank in this case just because of the circumstances and the amount of stuff you have in buckets)...then, transfer your corals and fish to the tank as well...put in the heater and powerheads for circulation...this would give you a little bit of time to get stuff in to the tank once any mini-cycle has completed...the sand you have in the nano cube right now probably will have dead bacteria in it...go ahead and put new sand it...but, I would go with a cup or two of that old sand on top...the dead bacteria will immediately start a mini-cycle...use the water in the now empty bucket to start filling your tank (make sure you use the bag/bowl method I explained before so you have NO sandstorm)...once you have enough water in there (about 1/2 full) start your aquascaping...any room you have left over start putting the water from your 20g in there...I would finish with the existing water at about 80% capacity or so...add fresh salt water from the LFS for the last 20%...like I said, there will be a little bacteria in the water and it will immediately go after the dead bacteria in the sand...this will give it something to feed on and immediately start growing...this will keep the die-off to an absolute minimum with your live rock...

Hopefully you can get this thing worked out...if you can't find your receipt for the original, have your wife go to the store where she bought it and see if they can give her a duplicate or gift receipt to show it was purchased there and the price...I would also take some pics from the bottom of the damaged cube too...set it on it's back and look through it from the bottom to the top for the pics...but you know that, you're an attorney... ;)

I don't think the problem was with your stand or live rock...the weight from your water, rock, sand, etc. is all transferred to your stand and not the glass...the glass, as long as your tank is supported by the footprint and not the glass itself, bears no weight...physics, pure physics...the weight is all transferred thanks to good-ole gravity and everything's nature to move towards the center of the earth...the weight from everything is transferred to your floor through your stand...so, if anything your floor will collapse before the glass should break providing a tank is properly supported... :D

Good luck...use this opportunity to learn and grow...and show us some more pics my friend...because, as I learned in another thread

ttiwwop.gif

:lmao:  :D I love that animated gif...I found it online at another reef site...I LOVE IT!! Sorry man, this just felt like the first good place and opportunity I could use it... :D

Good luck...let us know how your parameters look after all is back in the tank...

Thanks Hopeful.

I have a call in to UPS waiting to hear back as to a more specific delivery time for the new cube. I don't want to run to the LFS and miss the cube delivery (leaving the package is at the discretion of the driver). Once I get that info, I will be able to head out to the LFS and get what I need (sand, water etc.)

As for pics, I am trying...lets see with a quick test, if this opens in the thread or has to be clicked on:

I see ya have the picture thing figured out... :D

Now...about UPS...I've tried that before...we have UPS delivery problems in my area all the time so I have experience recently (unfortunately) calling them...they send a message to the local center when you call the 800 number...that center then has an hour to get back to you, but I've only EVER had them call me back 1 time...and that was because the driver was 3 hrs late on his route because he went to pull out of someones driveway and the rear axle fell out from underneath his truck!! Not funny for him, but, well, still funny... ;)

Can't wait for some more pics...hopefully all will work out well for ya...

Hehe...1 or 2 pictures were missing the first opening bracket... this one [

Cute dog...we have a yorky pup...trying to house train him right now is a pain...

Yeah, finally getting the hang of the photobucket.

The UPS people just called back. They are talking to the driver to see get a better estimate of when he will be here.

I actually told the woman on the phone I had a "specimen tank" being delivered. The one I had cracked last night and I have live animals in buckets all over my living room and was getting a shipment of more live animals tomorrow. Told her I need to get out and suppies for the new "specimen tank" and didn't want to miss delivery. She said it sounded "high priority". Maybe thats why they called back so quick.

Who knows?

I should post as my quote on here: "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Glad you got the pics figured out. Tank looked/will look again great. Chin up, full speed ahead. Cute dawg :D

Hehe...one of my shipments was the ballast for my light on my nano...it was several days late and DHL blamed it on Christmas...well, I told the lady I had several thousand dollars worth of corals that live off of light starving to death because this ballast was a replacement for one that burnt out suddenly...told her I would hold DHL responsible for any die off and they'd see me in court!! Didn't tell her it was just a new ballast for a tank I hadn't even put water in, I was just mad as you know what they were jerking me around...well, I had a call back from a Vice President within an hour or two after that...they started a formal investigation of the local shipping facility AND ate the cost to send my ballast to me with the overnight delivery driver the next morning!! :D Had the ballast by 9am...shame it took me threatening them to get it even if it was already late...

Just goes to prove your saying I guess...what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...or, is it whatever we don't kill in our tanks only get stronger? ;)
