New to the Nano reef

Can anyone help me out? I have noticed on a few of the other forums (LPS, esp.) that people are posting pics of crazy beautiful pieces of livestock and asking if they are a specific type ("is this the japanese rainbow?", for example). And then if it turns out its not what they thought, they seem a bit disgruntled. Maybe its because I haven't been in the hobby that long, but if I had a sweet piece of coral, I wouldn't care if its nickname was "the dogsh*t coral". Is it me, or are people really hung up on this?

Wow, our first split :)

Steve, there is a part of the hobby that is devoted to "named" corals. Usually the "named" corals cost a crapload more and are highly sought after. When someone buys a named coral or something similar it's usually an investment piece, something you can grow out and sell off future pieces and make money on.

The problem lies in the fact that some wild caught corals do look like a named coral or 2 named corals look similar. I saw the LPS thread in question, true Alien Eye Enchino's are out there but there are also several lookalikes which while look great are not as sought after.

I think the website that handles a lot of these is called Frag Farmers and if you see something called "Hugo" or "Tyree" then it's going to cost you a lot.

I have to agree with you though, if it looks cool who cares about the name. Sadly not everyone else feels the same way.
Zoaid is annoying, I have no problem with naming some of the more popular and colorful morphs but there are just to many zoa's on that site I wouldn't accept if you gave me. It would be better if the names were cut back a little bit. Plus there isn't someone that regulates them so I can call something one thing and someone else could call it something else.

I do know that a zoaid type site for LPS corals is on the way, I'll try to find the link again.....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! ................And I beholdin two new frags ,A bubble coral and a green ricordia

I second what Colin said...very nice, but the bubble can act like some LPS and like an anemone and sting the heck out of whatever it's sweeper tentacles can reach...

Keep them in lower light areas as well. I had a bubble that I sold, never grew and when it got knocked of the rock and went behind the rock it grew massive. Beautiful coral!

Colin,

I can definitely understand about people buying the corals to propagate them and the price resting on the name. The only name I am usually worried about when looking at corals is the scientific name (which I can then look up to see if my tank has the proper accoutrements to sustain it). But if it looks sweet, then I can't see what the difference is....

Did everyone see the new Nano Tank Of The Month?

Anyone entering?

I was thinking of using this pic but I took this first thing in the morning, the red blasto & green toadstool are not open so it looks a little crummy, maybe I'll work on a better pic this weekend.

Hi All, I'm Tom and I am a reefaholic. I made mention to CFO (wife) that Colin said that Coral Corner had some banggai cardinals in stock and since we were a scant 1/2 hour away we should see if they had some still in stock. Needless to say we left with a pair of cardinals and a small colony of purple discoma mushrooms. Pics later when all is settled.

King, everytime I scroll down and see that bubble coral, man, that has some cool coloring to it.

Steve, I agree if it looks good and you can care for it, it can be named vomit and I will add it to the tank. The thing with zoas, all the better colors have these great names and a larger price tag.

Tom

Oh Colin, wait till all is open then take a pic. The pictures are nothing compared to what the tank looks like in person. I can spend hours and not see everything.

Tom

Hope you have better luck than I did with the cardinal Tom. Still have no clue what happened.

Found the Neon Green Sinularia, had to move around my rock again but I like how it turned out. Might get a pic in the morning.

Colin,

They have three more left, $15 can't beat that. They had some very large pieces there and a good selection of fish that all looked very healthy, including a flame angel.... I am enticing you.

The new tank is still cycling and I am filling the 10 gal. very fast. I finally saw the cudgeon last night. I think it is nocturnal, glad I did not pay $75 for a fish that I never see.

Here is the pics.

This is the 10 gall, robbed it of some live rock for the BioCube and added a HOB filter.

Enjoy

Gonna do some fish breeding? You have the perfect pairs for it :)

My little clown has been paying attention to the frogspawn a lot recently, not full on hosting yet but wanting to. Got a cool picture but my computer is acting funny, I'll have to restart and see if that will help.

Thanks for the comment smketyr. I got the little guy for small money . I figured with a little love and attention I could bring it around! Cool Clam , now that has nice color.
Love that frogspawn colin. I can definitely see how they get their name.

Colin, great frogspawn I am getting a frag from prugs. Just need some rics and candy canes and I am done with the stock list for the new tank.

The wife thinks everthing should be a pair. I don't think we ever had a fish that was not a pair, unless the LFS said we couldn't. I could never tell her otherwise.

I think this is the fastest I ever had a clown host something. My percula did not host anything for over a year, but once they hosted they got mean.
