New Topic - Electric Bills

Does FP&L offer anything in the way of discounts? this time last year my bill was 130/140. Now even with the AC turned up to 80 most of the day I'm still getting bills around 240. Oh and I really liked the fuel charge that was a nice touch.

I think FPL is doing some scamming. During the hurricanes they charged everyone on an "estimated" bill.....and of course it was REALLY high. Next month we all got credit for "kwh", but since they charge on a tier system...ie, x amount for first x amount, y amount for next x amount, z amount for next x amount, they charged the really high amount since everyone was "estimated" high.......but you didnt see a credit for it next month.....

Freed,

Did you switch your work to second shift just to save $$$ on your power bill or do you just happen to work second shift?

No, I've been on 2nd shift for a bit over 7 years now. I wish I would have known about the On Peak/Off Peak meter 7 years ago. I could have saved thousands of $$$ had I known.

Quite truthfully, Fl Power is getting away with charging higher rates, and unless we unite and and write t our congressman, nothing will change.

Actually this is the reason I am on RC right now. I just got my electric bill. My electric usually tops out at about $202, this month it is $279...***!!! My house is only about 2400 sqft and our A/C is too small, I know that but either way, almost $300 is crazy. I remember before tanks my electric bill was about $100 - $165 now it is $145 - $279.

I think we are going to get a larger A/C unit in the coming months but not sure how much of a difference that will make.

Eitherway, right now I am a little ****ed and need to do something, cuz this is crazy.

Mike

At least for S. FL, FPL has a "non-peak program". However, the way it works is so retarded that no matter what shift you work or if you use the electricity during the considered off peak hours it is based on total usage too. It mostly benefit people that are hardly ever home regardless of the time. So in other words, if you don't use electricity at all they give you a discount!!!!!

thats funny, if you dont use electricity you have a lower bill. Thats crazy, I should have thought about that before!!!

I am sure if I got a bigger A/C unit for my house, my power bill would probably drop $100 per month, then get rid of my tank, another $40...man that would be sweet. Anyone wanna buy my 58?

Mike

Well, I will try to find out our congressman e-mail and at least have them look into (not sure what good that will do) but it's worth the try. I'm just amazed at how costly it is to have electricity. I keep my house cool at night only and even with a new unit, both outside and inside, it has made somewhat of a difference, but costly still by all means!
Good luck with your new unit Mike, I do hope it saves you $$.
I can't wait for cool weather now, as my air will not work at all and I will only be running the tank constantly.

Could you explain how their program works? You may not be understanding it correctly.

It has been about 6 months since I spoke with them about it. Call FPL and ask and you'll see.

I'm not worried about it. Besides why would I want to waste my dime on a long distance phone call for your benefit?

My friend works at the Juno Bch cooperate office I'll ask him what they have as far as programs. I really don't think they have much that actually benefits anyone but them but I'll see. I'm sure he would have told me already, plus he is constantly complaining about his bill too.

That would be great, first is the gas and how we need come up with another solution so that we don't habe to depend on it.
Now I guess electricity is next??

I work for the city and know about all the rates. Unfortunately, it will keep going up. We charge 6 cent a kilawatt but we pay bulk to the producers. In the last 4 years it went up from charging customers 4 dollars per 1000kwh to 44 I believe it is currently.

As for getting a bigger AC, make sure you get the correct size as with a fish tank, you want the AC to accurately cool your house due to moisture and mold. Oversize it and your humidity will be high which mold loves.

I checked Solar for my house and for the kilawatt I use it would cost me 70K dollars to run pure solar. If it was 20 or even 30K, I would get it done now. My house is only 2200 sq ft w/ 1700 living so expect to pay alot more. Also, your electric company has to approve it otherwise it is a waste. You require a special meter that allows electric to be backfeed it into the power grid when you have a surplus. Then at night, you use their power for a wash. Also keep in mine many charge you the normal monthly fee PLUS fees for doing solar so it might not be worth it.

Your better off getting natural gas for everything you can although that isn't too cheap either but it is cheaper.

The problem now is that the cost of solar doesn't offset the cost of current electricity. I would like to go solar but right now I guess the technology is to new, the demand isn't there, so the cost is still not affordable for most of us. Give it time and you'll probably see more and more solar panels going up. It will be like the next cell phone craze. Right behind an affordable fuel.

Ugh , that was the maine reason I switched to T5's .. im hoping they save me some amount of money . I am up also 40 dollars a month .

And yes the off peak doesnt work to well , mostly because your fish get mad at the lights being on during night and they feel like they are an alaskan salmon .

Im trying to switch to as many low wattage devices as I can find . But with the tank and the AC on a 2 story house =/ .. im pretty much screwed.

anyone want to move to maine with me?

My fish, corals, inverts have no problems with the lights being on during the Off Peak hours. It took them MAYBE two to three days to get adjusted.

Not all electric companies charge by peak. Our electric department does not care what time you use electricity.
