Okay, research time.
:reading:

Before I drop a couple mortgage payments to an unknown on-line Vendor for a new Canon EOS 7D package, what do you RC folks know about these guys??

SkyPointDigital.com

Questions, Comments and previous experiences are welcome.

Thanks!

Also, after hearing about their bait and switch I felt a little deja vu and was trying to think of where I just read about that. I know where I just read it...

A word of caution
There are a ton of really sleazy resellers in the camera business. The typical method of operation is this:

You see an unbelievably cheap price on the a camera on their website. You place your order online. A few minutes later you get an email telling you to call and verify your CC information. Once they get you on the phone the start selling you add-ons (that would normally come with the camera) like batteries, software, cables, etc. If you refuse the upgrades your camera suddenly becomes back-ordered and never ships. If you agree to them you end up getting a grey market camera body (no US warranty) and a bunch of 3rd party add-ons for more money that the camera would have cost from a legitimate reseller.

If the price seems too good to be true check out the vendor at: http://resellerratings.com

He was right ;)

Well.......Friggin' shoot me now! I knew it!

I knew my Spidey-sense was tingling for a Reason. Damn glad I asked! Thanks RC!

Really good info. I thought it weird that I couldn't get an address for those losers.

Especially due to the costs of DSLR's and the lenses, it is very good to double check the retailer. It would be horrible to get ripped off on such an expensive piece of equipment.

Good thing you checked ;)

Let us know what you end up getting.

She's gonna kill me!

She's gonna kill me!

Better to find out now I suppose, but now I'm back the higher prices from B&H. It's complicated, because now I really want that new lens from Canon:
Canon 18-200mm(!!!) f/3.5-5.6 EF-S IS lens for its versatility. (Sigh"¦.!)

Thee $pousal Unit is gonna kill me, because now I'm gonna drop $2,300!!! (But I can't see NOT buying the right lens, if it's out there. Why would I want own two or three lens, when I can have One fast, wide-angle / telephoto zoom, and NOT have to open the camera and let the dust hit the inside??

(Sigh"¦ ) she's gonna kill me"¦.. :hmm2: because the back end HAS to be the new Canon EOS 7D.

:) First thing - this may be a link you might be interested in if you haven't read it yet.

Second thing is I just wanted to point out that a little bit of your thinking is flawed (hey, its ok, we were all there at one point). There is a reason for owning multiple lenses and it comes down to quality. Now I'm not saying the 18-200mm is a bad lens (I don't even have any personal experience with it), nor am I saying it can't produce good images, but its a generalist lens as are most lenses that have an extreme focal range. You're almost certainly going to want to upgrade to better built lenses with better and faster glass down the line (f/3.5-5.6 ain't exactly a speed demon).

Another point I wanted to touch on was the dust issue, even leaving one lens on the body and never taking it off won't prevent getting sensor dust. Sensor dust is a fact of life with DSLRs, unless you were to leave it in a clean room and never use it you'll have to deal with dust. That's why they make blowers and sensor cleaning kits, its not bad and might as well get used to cleaning it because half the time the darn things come from the factory with dust already on the sensor. :) I'm changing lenses constantly, inside, outside, even in blizzards - I don't worry about it. Most of the time a few blasts with a rocket blower is good enough since I tend to do most of my shooting wide open (this is a little different if you're shooting stopped down f/11 and smaller like many landscape photographers or macro).

You're not likely to find any legit places that sell cheaper with the same customer service as B&H. If there was B&H wouldn't be doing the amount of business they do. :)

Perfect. Thanks! And the EOS 7D has a self-cleaning sensor.

I agree, that the "L" series is fa$ter, but it'll cost. I do think you just pushed me over the edge. I'm buying it now! (In Time, I'll get the marco and the long-lens for sports. At 8fps, I'll want it.)

Any experience with Adorama? They were my next stop anyways.

:D I've bought more stuff from Adorama than I can count. Both my 50mm lens and one of my bodies came from them, I forget what else in my kit has came from them.

I have dealt with Skypoint before. What was said was right. They will ask you to call and then offer all kinds of add-ons. Well, the salesperson did not convice me. I knew they were gonna insist, I was ready. So I stood firm and declined any add ons. The guy just hanged up on me. I got my order a couple of weeks later, it was what I ordered. Will I do business with them again?....NOPE.

You're very lucky to have received your order. Hopefully you'll never have to have any warranty repairs done.

Typical Bait & Switch practices.
Avoid at all costs. Many of these shady places are owned by the same company!
Stick with B&H and Adorama or even Amazon (direct, not third party sellers).

Another few that I've had good luck with are 42nd St Camera, Sammy's Camera, and Cameta Camera. These last 3 might ask you if you would like additional items but you can politely decline if you don't need them. No hard sell and you get everything the manufacturer intended you to.

But B&H you can't go wrong with.
