i like the clamp on the ASM skimmer as they work great but are a bit flimsy to say the least .if you have spare time you can clean your gravel bed as that part is excluded in the semi auto water change .
Dont know if Im crazy about it just yet, water changes only take 5 minutes and I dont have any spilled water to clean up. This system is much too efficient, dont know what else to do with my free time now........
I usually start the water change early in the morning, I start the water change and go wash my teeth and face, by the time I am done the water change is also done.
Nope no bare bottom type set up. I have about a 2 inch sand bed which works great for my leopard wrasses. I never siphon the bottom of my sand either. I had understood that it was better to not disturb the sand bed. The current in my tank keeps the sand bed pretty clean so as far as cleaning it I do nothing. I dont get any nuisance algae either.
Prior to a water change I usually stir up any detritus that gets trapped on the live rocks with a small power head. Then I just let it get sucked up into the overflow.
if you vacuum the sand bed it would be beneficial for sure .its the disturbing of it and releasing everything into the water coulomb that is not good for the tank and its inhabitants .you should give vacuuming a try and see whats really trapped in the bed and you would be surprised .i maintain many tanks and we get the accounts from people that don't properly maintain for long periods of time and they are a disaster when we start . after a few months of the proper cleaning the customers are simply amazed at what i have done with their mess .
