Lebowski, you don't need a sump, you can run this unit in a closed-loop setup. you will, however, need a pump

It's a lot less than plumbing 4 complete returns or 2 SCWDs. The 4-way has one central inlet and 4 outlets that can be plumbed as simply or as complicated as you like. Although this is not the ideal set up, it doesn't get much simpler than this: 4-Way Set Up
It doesn't appear to need any more than my single SCWD set up.
The Little Mermaid Aquarium from Walmart is plug and play. We are dealing with custom reef aquariums. Any good piece of equipment should allow you to configure it how you like.
Everybody step back and look at the quality, complexity and total cost of their current plumbing set ups and put things in perspective before criticizing someone forward thinking in our hobby. My squid is thin, brittle, molded plastic with barbs for outlets. It works fine for now but I would never consider it the same quality as something with a solid CNC machined housing.

Do you have plump pipe returns over the tank or can you plumb them through the back under water in closed loop system? Is back pressure an issue on this design? I will buy a four way if I can use it on a closed loop system with four returns through the back of my tank below the water line.

hi paul
first off i wanted to say great job on your invention.i think i will be placing a order with you soon. i have a question of placement of the revolutions. how can you mount them at different levels in the tank without putting alot of pipeing into the tank?the last thing i want to see is alot of pvc in my tank. it can be iam just missing the whole concept of the design. i really want to eleminate putting things in my setup other then live stock.

A spray bar at the lower back behind the rock is a great idea, running pipes under the substrate from the back too the two front corners of the tank is also great, easier to do if it's a new set up, bringing lines just below the surface of the tank are not obnoxious to view, hiding feedlines below the eurobracing makes perfect sense.
I am not sure if you are aware or not but the revolution will work upside down, fill the air pocket with substrate and plant frags in it... works like a charm. (bobbing GSP etc)

The video unit has been running flawlessly for 2 months..24/7
and thats with the lighter duty motor, I don't expect any issues with it, and even less with the newer motor. the same motor on the original design is still on my tank with no issues even though the motor is getting salt creep over it after 9 months.
Warranty... 20 million gallons or 750 thousand revolutions which ever comes first, roughly 18 months.

would it be OK to mount the 4-way unit with the motor facing downwards? I'd like to run the unit from the exact center of my aquarium to minimize pipe length to the revolutions.

Aluminum Zinc still corrodes. As I said, it is not as apparent as other metals and it is at a much slower rate, but they both corrode, even as an alloy.
Golf nut, It would be wise to somehow protect the motor from salt spray to avoid premature failure.
Finding good information on the web on such topics is difficult, but here's a quote from a web page advertising the benefits of Aluminum Zinc coating of steel "In salt spray tests with cut edges exposed, the corrosion resistance is typically three to four times that of G90 Galvanized." I'm certain that they wouldn't exaggerate the corrosion rate of a product that they are hyping as an alternative to reduce corrosion.

I am ready to order a four way but need to know what the gph spectrum, actually the maximum is. I have Sequence 4200 for my closed loop and would like to have the four way directly above the pump. Can this thing handle that type of flow? Does the new motor for the eight-way fit in the four-way body? Await your response. Great idea, design and niche product by the way.

The data I found on this coating states that it will lose 21g/M^2 over 10 years in a salt-spray environment, considering the size of this unit (I'm guessing that it has about a 1.5" diameter from the pictures), that comes down to 0.001141933 grams of this stuff over 10 years -- a ladybug weighs about 0.0013g
