can we get together about 5.30 this evening?

if so give me a call on the toll free, leave me a ph number and pm me with an address to hook up at, I can leave here about 3;30 or so.

tagging along here...sounds great. I have a 100 gal with a closed loop through a sqwd now. It would be cool to add the 4 way with two ports coming up the bottom and two over the top.

I'm back to reality, snow and cold.

A week in Florida was wonderful but my game needs to be improved and there are not enough hours in the day, It was a hoot to see some Florida stores and the difference in corals available, live shark eggs looked very interesting but hard to get through customs.

Getting through NC wasn't fun either, I guess they don't like speeders, ever seen the inside of a cop car there? enough weapons to attack a small country!!! they personally escorted me to an ATM machine to get the bond payment, do they actually know what innocent before being proved guilty means?

It seems this thread is diversifieing somewhat, there are a number of excellent suggestions, and a number of pertinent comments, I have no plans to patent the 8 way or 4 Way, if anyone wants to knock it off feel free to do so, I do however have a patent in the works for a modification of another relevant product that has not been shown which is in a completely different field, therefore irrelevant to this post, you cannot patent anything that has been seen by the general public prior to the patent application...period.

Mr Stockman has a number of good points, I too can build a Sea Swirl for less than $60, if you just want to add up the cost of components, my time is isn't cheap so don't expect me to sell one for that price. DIY guys can spend hours working on projects, and never consider what their time is actually worth...who cares.. we are having fun. and thats what it is all about!!!

and "I", am having fun

Paul--

Acutally your statement about public disclosure is not true. You have up to a year from the time of public disclosure to file a patent. I still think that the issue is novelty. It is a new "design", which would allow for a design patent. Again design patents are more or less worthless. A utility patent is what you really want and although you could might be able to get this patent allowed, it would not stand up in court.

Keep up the good work.

Hi paul
Just recieved my 8 way.
Haven't plumbed it yet, but can't wait to see it working on my tank.
Again thank you very much for all your help & suggestions.
It is because of people like you that this hobby is great.

Hi Serge...would'nt Surge be more appropriate?

couple of questions guys

what is the width of most Euro braces, and what thickness, I'm working on a simplified plumbing unit.

Heres one for my friend H2oENG

If water in a closed loop comes out of the tank and falls 100 feet, then reaches the pump which has to pump it back up 100 feet, (bearing in mind that the water level without the pump running would now be the same as in a U-Tube) how much head-loss does the pump incur?

This was a question posed to me after a couple of wobbly pops last night, I decided to ask here.

Paul

Rumor has it, the only resistance is in the friction of the pipe and fittings.. Dunno how that works out either, but have heard it quoted many times.

Your still going to incure head pressure ,, it wont be a true 100 of head pressure because you have pressure(Gravity) feeding it. I guess the only way to really test is with a flow meter. this would be intresting to see how this formula would work out. Im guessing with the gravity pulling into the pump to feed back up your pump would only see it as a 65-75 foot head.... 5 cents worth on this one.:)

Hi Paul,
Glad you made it back safely!
The Euro braces that I've seen are 3-4", but not sure of any standard size. If the tank was huge, then it seems 6-8"ers would be more appropriate.
OK, say the tank stand was 100' high. The closed loop pump is at the bottom, connected directly to the tank sides via the 200 (ish) feet of piping. The head on the pump is basically just the friction head of that much piping and any fittings. The static head on the suction side cancels out the discharge head since it is a closed loop. The pressure at the pump is still 43 psi, but the pump can easily move the water up the 100' beacause of the 100' of pressure pushing down the suction side. This loop could be 100000' and it'd just see the friction head.
Discharge head - Static head + Friction head = TDH (Total Dynamic Head). (IIRC, its been years....)
If the the water drained into a sump, then had to be pumped back up then you need a pump that can push to minimum 120'.
But think of the skimmer you could run with 43 psi coming down from the tank!:D
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here....

D'oh! Forgot all about the bracing question!
I've got 4" braces on front and sides, and a 6" brace in the rear, because I drilled a few holes in it to make room for my seaswirls. The large tank (~560 gallons) at the zoo we got braced, has 6" braces. I've seen a couple 120 gallon tanks braced with 3 inch.

OK Guys, Here is a little review on my 8 way in my 300 gallon reef with 1500 GPH return from the sump:

I have had my 8 way in and running for a few weeks now and I have been trying (very hard) to find something I don't like about these things, the only problem I came up with (and it is small) is that you can't use standard 1 inch male adapter fittings with these units because of how close the outlets are to each other, (my unit has a 1 inch out) you need to use threaded nipple instead.
It is very well built and seems to be very heavy duty as far as construction/material it was built from.

Mine has been running 24/7 on my sump return and is working great, it is so quiet that you can't even hear it running in a VERY quiet room. The motor is a little hot to touch but it is normal (not hot enough to make you move your hand away) The flow in my tank is better that it has ever been even with 4 sea-swirls in it.
I cant wait to match it with some of the "revolutions" I can only imagine the flow you will be able to get at that point.

I have a short mpeg video of the flow in my tank sped up 15 times so you can see the "action" it makes. I don't want to take up RC's bandwith with it, if someone wants to host it I would be happy to send it to them.

Bottom line: This is a great product with no obvious drawbacks at all. I will recomend it to all that ask about it and plan to replace some of the sea-swirls in some of my customers tanks with these.

Keep up the good work paul.

Very, very interesting product! I was all set to go with sea swirls and then this pops up. Can the 4 way handle 3000 gallons per hour on a closed loop? I probally won't get that much flow once I have it plumbed but just checking.

Thanks,
Kirk

Easily Distracted,
I absolutely LOVE that avatar!!!
Thanks for the write up U.P.B.

What is a threaded nipple? Like a hose barb? I hope not.
