Newb in Binghamton

Hi, I don't have a tank yet but am just now starting to gather equipment and find suitable space in my home. I don't know anyone who has a reef tank so this forum is great. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go around Binghamton for equipment and/or livestock?

Your best bet may be to buy used equipment. People are always upgrading and have stuff that works great but maybe too small or just not what the new system requires. Sometimes someone is getting out of the hobby for one reason or another and they sell their whole system. You can get some good deals but watch out for some that expect people to pay new part prices for used equipment.

Post what size and type tank you are trying to set up.

Dave

There's a lot of used stuff out there but it's farther away than I would like. I'll keep searching. I was thinking a 55 gal to 75 gal display depending on what I can find. I plan on some fish and mostly coral, probably with a deep sand bed.

Yeah craigslist is good. I had to travel for my tabk but it was definitely worth it . Also with the guy i bought it off he had a guy who had liverock for little to nothing so it was a hreat deal all around. I looked for months tho till i found it. Trust me patience is key to this hobby. Its probably the hardest part

As said above, patience is key. I've kept reef tanks for almost 10 years, and I've deffinitely made my share of mistakes. Make sure you have a solid plan on what you want to do with your tank. Drilled tanks with an overflow and sump will give you the most flexability for upgrades and/or changes to your filtration, but all HOB equipment can work as well. I've always ran my tanks with HOB skimmers and refugiums, but the next tank I set up will be drilled and sumped.

Take your time and ask questions on here. This community is the greatest help you will find.

I can recommend a place that I visit once a year. Kind of a hole in the wall, BUT they have crazy sales. Every 31st, he puts livestock at 1/2 price, and equipment at 20%, and dry goods 10% (I may have mixed up the sales on equipment and goods). I've never had a problem with bad fish from there either.

I don't know the name off hand, I will get back to you on that.

Ernan,

first welcome to STRS, this is a great place to start in your quest for a reef setup. There is stuff listed here locally and on the main forum as well.
Craigslist has already been suggested so Ill just Ditto that recommendation.

Also don't be afraid to ask someone from the group to go with you if you find something close.

August 18th we are having a frag meet at my place, food is great and so is the company great place to network and meet people.

Thanks for the responses. I plan on a sump and refugium. I was looking for a tank that was drilled but found some videos on drilling your own tank. It doesn't look that hard. Has anyone done this themselves? I don't know if I'll make the frag meet but I will think about it. If not this time definately in the future.

Natures Best is out on 26 in Vestal

ABC Reefs is in Syracuse

Creature Comfort is on upper front st in Bingo

In order, I know Syracuse is a trip but their prices are good and they also have a used table that has alot of good finds!!

Hope this helps! Good luck!! And WELCOME!!:wavehand:

A 120 gal would be nice but I'm not sure I'll have the space for it. I'll have to check out Natures Best, never heard of it.
That used table sounds nice, I can make a trip Syracuse sometime. If you didn't know, they sell salt water fish at Livingstons animal kingdom next to kmart on state st.
I thought the fish looked nice but I don't know if I'm a good judge.

I just tore down my 72g today...upgraded to a 220g. Tank, stand, lights, etc will all be going up for sale once I get things cleaned up. PM me if you're interested. Welcome to a fun and addictive hobby.

I actually made a good deal with someone for a tank, lights, and some other stuff. I haven't gotten it yet so anything can happen. Good luck with your upgrade. Thanks again all for welcoming me, I've been planning this for some time now, good to see it starting to come around.

It's a 75 gallon. I still gotta get a tank for the sump. I thought I might just use some kind of rubbermaid for that though.

That would be Nature's Best, out in Vestal on 26S, Owner Rick is a great guy, store is a bit of a whole, but the owner is a good guy and has been making a lot of changes / upgrades to the place.

We know, we just don't go. I used to work down town and would often wander in for lunch, have just seen soooooo many sick fish, ick, and heard just horrible advice on so many levels.

As a whole, I have always found it best to go to a fish store for fish. Leave the pet stores for puppy supplies. (If you want a good bike, you go to a bike store, not walmart)

Oh yes, and
