Newer Aqueon Tanks now made all tempered??

Well I decided to drill my first tank. I have 6 holes to drill. I figure that if no one will give me a guarantee that if they break it, they will replace it. I may as well be the one that does the deed. :eek1: I bought my bit at home depot for 10.50 not to bad considering the cheapest i found for having it done was 20.00 a hole and that was a local fish shop and....... he proceeded to tell me that as far as he knows the new tanks ( about a year old ) are all tempered. Can any one help??

The manufacture has not gotten back to me yet on this. The tank is an Aqueon 75E bought in June.:mixed:

Here was mine I just sold....
It was only tempered on the bottom

I just drilled a 50g with no problem. Like the other poster showed they temper the bottoms starting at a certain size but not the "whole" tank.It was the same when they were branded AGA tanks
It just depends on where you want to put the holes at.

Okay thanks,

I do have one more option I am going to explore today the shop I bought it from is having a truck load sale and there is supposed to be reps on site. I will ask the aqueon rep just to make sure. I had planned on drilling today I hope i still get to. I am still nervous about it a lot at stake here. When i bought my bit last night the clerk was a fellow reefer and gave some advice on the process.

Are you sure you bought the right bit? It sounds as if you bought a tile type bit. Last time I checked HD didn't sell glass cutting bits.

You are going to regret buying a cheap bit when you are on the 6th hole and the whole pane shatters.

You are right it is a tile bit. you dont think it will work? If it is a matter of durability I will buy another one and use two for the job.

Last time I was in HD, they actually had a hole saw for cutting glass. It was about $60 though. Diamond tipped instead of carbide. Would highly suggest that you get it instead of your tile bit. It was in the tools section not the tile.

Is it a quality of the hole in the glass or is it just the wrong bit? I talked with the rep and he called the glass person in the warehouse that assembles the tanks and it is only the bottom that is tempered. He said that it would cost too much to temper the whole thing so it looks like i am good to go. Except for the bit though. sound like i bought the wrong one.

jksteele010,

Yea I was in tools and the clerk gave me the one he used on his tank he had to use two of them but he drilled 10 holes in his 180g. I didn't see the diamond tipped at this location.

They do sell Glass bits but they are diamond tipped small bits made by Dremel and run about 10.00 a pop. They work but take awhile to cut a nice hole and wont be true round as you will be free handing it. I did a few this way on my old system.

For the new systems I bought all the hole saws off Ebay since I had time to wait and it made it much easier

The guy is telling a fish tale. You are not going to drill 1 hole (let alone 10) in a fish tank with a carbide holesaw. You need to order the proper tool to do the job. HD does not sell it.

There are a dozen places to buy them, but eBay is likely the cheapest.

Hello Bean,

Well I went ahead and drilled the tank. It worked but i would not recommend this method. It does make a hole but the back side where it cuts through is not really clean. I stopped after the third hole because I did not realize how close i was to the end and got some nasty chip out. Now I don't know if the tank is ruined or not.I am not a glass expert by any means. I can only hope the by putting in the overflow inside it will strengthen the panel enough to save the tank. ( Maybe that statement is just my way of dealing with denial) Or should I scrap the tank?

I am listening........

yea i am taking them now and then i have to figure out how to post them. I am not to savy on computers
