Nigari...revisited

Ive been looking for a way to supplement my magnesium without spending a fortune and without adding a bunch of epsom salt. I ran across several threads such as: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=240183

I am looking for more information on the impact of dosing Nigari in the reef system. Anybody over here have any experience with it, good or bad?

Any info would be appreciated.

I'd first look for magnesium chloride hexahydrate de-icer from the Dead Sea Works. It is fine to use. Other brands may not be. You can get it mail order. Here's a thread:

The nigari may be OK, but only a few people are using it, as far as I know.

Is the problem that so few people are using it that it is hard to say whether it is safe?

I take it there have been no conclusive studies on it?

It seems like a good product but I am unsure. Thanks for the info!

Also, it seems like you can only order that stuff in LARGE quantities.

There is another long thread here in the chemistry forum on Nigari, there was a individual who had been using it for a while. I can't say if it is OK to use or not. I have no "searching" powers so unable to find the thread.

I've not seen any careful study of its suitability for reef aquaria. Some folks do use it, but it is not so widely discussed that many have tried, just as was the case with the deicers before Dead Sea Works came out with their detailed analysis.
