Niger Triggerfish

Depends on how much you feed it and water quaility it could grow to a little bit large. So say 3"-5" range.

It will probably grow about the same rate, maybe a little faster. You need to watch out when buying these very small triggers as quite abit of them die.

I need to get one a bit smaller then my puffer right? Or can they be the same size?

Thanks,

Eric

From what I've seen Niger Triggerfish do not grow as rapidly as the Clown triggers, and if you do put a tiny one in after your Toby it "SHOULD" be peacful. Niger Trigs are claimed to be one of the more docile triggers but as I've said before mine is the most aggressive Trigger I have. A guy I know has an 8" Niger as well, who he had to remove into a holding tank due to the fact he was trying to kill his Blue-Lined. I have a Toby in with the big guy, and he never bothers her, but everyone else is harrassed on and off. Maybe he knows by killing her, he in turn will die from poisoning....

Sorry if you have told me before but I forget what Trigger do you have in with your Toby?

Thanks for your help, I know aggressive tanks can be hard and it depends on the fish. I have a spare tank that I can move a fish into if gets picked on while I find a buyer with a good setup to take the fish.

Thanks,

Just my 2cents but Ive got a Niger trigger about 31/2 long and he gets harassed by a 21/2 Damsil.My Niger is quite peaceful.Great fish.

Thanks Rodburner, I might get one of those Triggers I like them the best.

i had a niger and it never attacked anyone, i was even keeping it with a clown trigger and a humu trigger for a couple months together and they were fine. although, they were all between 1" and 3".

i currently keep a humu and clown (same ones) with a toby in my 80g. i put a large seashell in there, and the humu lives in it, but the puffer seems to think he can go hang out by it, and the humu just chases it away. no biting involved...

the toby would poison the water? what kind of toby do you have that has poison in it?

Poison Puffers? -
<Greetings, JasonC here...>
Are the puffers poisonous that you get at the pet store? <To an extent, yes.> How should you dispose of them properly if they die. <Flush...> Just concerned for any possible environmental issues that may arise from a toilet burial. <There wouldn't be any environmental effects - considering the toilet either goes to the sewer or septic system... nothing in those systems is going to any better or worse off with a dead puffer floating by.>
Thanks
<Cheers, J -- >

Your keeping a hummu, clown, and a niger in an 80? Expect problems with that clown...nigers grow slower than CT's from my experience.

No toby's don't release poison it's there flesh thats poisonous! So the Trigger taking a few sample chunks would end up dead.

Little info for you, There has been much research about the origin of the toxicity in puffer fish. Some scientists believe the poison is a direct effect of their feeding habits; feeding on toxic algae, sponges and coelenterates. The theory being that it may be non-toxic when the fish eat the prey, but then converted into a toxic form in their bodies. Another hypothesis is that the poison is a product of sex glands. It has been shown that puffer fish are their most toxic before and during sex organ activity. The female is more toxic than the male fish. The toxin is concentrated in the skin and internal organs of the puffer fish, although the muscle tissue has been found to contain the toxin also. Recent research suggests strongly that tetrodotoxin in puffer fish comes from bacteria in their food source.

I presently have a blue throat and a Niger and they donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t even look at each other or anybody else. The most passive triggers that I know of are the Niger, Blue throat, Cross hatch, Sargasum (sp?) and pink tail. Cross Hatch and Sargasum will most likely be expensive because of their rarity at the LFS. I have had Huma Huma, or Picasso triggers go crazy and attack everything, within hours of being introduced into the tank. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m talking about it attacking fish 4 times its size. Clown, Huma Huma, Picasso, and the absolute worst aggressive, being the Ungulate and Queen trigger. This may sound weird, but the triggers with the upturned mouth like a Niger seem to be the most peaceful.

Thanks for the info Titan*69, I will have to keep a close eye on my puffer that no other fish is picking on him.

Thanks,

Eric

My niger (about 3") is a total wus.... Doesn't bother anyone and luckily nobody really messes with him. Had a clown trigger that was introduced a couple months after the niger and things were good for about 6 months. Then the clown went EVIL and went to life at the LFS.

if you get a trigger that small feed less but more often....2x to 3x a day is really helpful for them at that size/age.
