Nikon AF Micro 105mm f/2.8

Does anyone know, are all of the Nikon AF Micro 105mm f/2.8 lenses a 1:1 reproduction ratio? I have been looking for on on various websites and see new and used ones that look different. Some list a 1:1 ratio and some don't so it is hard to tell. I don't want to spend a good chunck of change and not have the ratio I am looking for.

Yes, if they are Micro, they are 1:1. Some of the older versions might not work in your camera though... Only the current version (AF-S) is compatible with all cameras.

If your camera has a focus motor built into the body, the AF 105 will auto focus. If not it won't auto focus, but all other functions will be available. Most of the time when shooting macros, you'll be shooting in manual anyway, but the 105 can be used as a regular 105mm lens, so auto focus may be something you want.

Does any one know if there is a way to tell from a Nikon lenses serial number what year it was manufactured? Any disadvantages to buying a lens a decade or two old?

None at all. As long as the lens is Af-D or Af-S it will auto focus on your camera. I have a couple Sigmas, one about 10 years and the other about 20 years old. The 10 year one auto focuses, but the little mini-wide was before AF. It also doesn't meter, but when shooting manually, it's a real nice lens.

You can try Nikon's website, but I've never checked a lens by serial number.

The one I found looks pretty solid, but based on the serial number research I have done it seems to be a 1990 - 1993 model. This seems to be right before the AF-D was released in 1994.

1970-1983: Nikon made a manual focus 105mm f/4 micro.
1983-present (2008): Nikon still makes an f/2.8 manual focus AI-s micro.
1990-1993: Nikon sells the non-D version of this 105mm AF.
1993-2006: Nikon updates the first 105mm f/2.8 AF with the "D" feature which couples focused distance to the flash exposure system. It sold new for $700 in 2006.
2006-present (2008): Nikon replaces this lens with the AF-S VR version.

Is it best to stay with the 1994 + ones or is one from 1990 - 1993 an issue?

Sorry for the extended questions, I just want to make sure I get a lens that is beneficial for micro reef photos.

Whem you shoot macros of tanks, most focus manually. The thing about the 105, (at least the AfD and AfS versions), it's also a very sharp 105 telephoto lens. They all can work for shooting reefs, though I'd go with at least the AI version.
